Official rule

Mods disable achievements

Larian states that using mods disables achievements. A modded build and a native subclass are different choices.

No promise is made that removing a mod repairs an existing save.

Larian — Community Update 29: Playing with Mods

Official mode rule

Choose actual Honour for its completion award

A successful Honour campaign is required for its award. Continuing after total party failure does not retain Honour eligibility.

Custom with Honour combat rules is a separate configuration.

Choose a character & party planCurrent plan: Vengeance Paladin 12

Find a style that fits your priorities

Choose who leads conversations, how you spend actions, and which party jobs you cover. Withers can rebuild your class for 100 gold after recruitment; race and origin remain fixed.

Reorder the comparison without changing your game settings or story preferences.

Armoured striker with saving-throw aura

Vengeance Paladin 12

You combine ordinary melee attacks with smites spent only when a confirmed hit deserves extra damage. Armour supports the opening, Vengeance helps focus a dangerous target, and Aura of Protection later strengthens nearby allies. Your oath affects some story decisions, so the build asks for attention to roleplay as well as spell-slot economy.

Learning curveModerate

Smite prompts, spell slots and oath consequences require more decisions than basic weapon attacks.

Choose this when you wantHeavy-armour melee with support value · Choosing when a hit deserves burst · Charisma dialogue and party defense

Reconsider if: You want completely unrestricted oath decisions; You dislike long-rest resources on a melee character.

What you actually do

A practical rhythm, from preparation to payoff.

1
Mark a threat

Use your Vengeance tools when focusing a dangerous enemy will help the team. Approach with a safe lane, keep the aura useful and attack before committing smite resources.

2
Approve smite

Answer the smite prompt according to enemy health, resistance and critical status. Decline unnecessary spending, then preserve remaining slots for a real control or recovery need.

Illustrative play example
Illustrative encounter

Illustrative scenario: a heavily armoured opponent pressures two allies. You approach so Aura of Protection covers them, use an eligible Vengeance tool, and make weapon attacks. A confirmed critical creates a useful smite opportunity; you approve one slot, then decline a second when the target is already nearly defeated. A resistant enemy receives ordinary damage or party support instead. The saving-throw aura contributes even when burst resources are low, provided allies remain within its actual range.

FROM A REALISTIC START TO THE PAYOFF

Your progression path

Read in order. Each stage explains what makes the next step practical.

1Opening
Armour and confirmed-hit smites

Start with a suitable melee stat, Charisma and durable armour. At level 2, configure Divine Smite reactions to ask before spending a slot. Ordinary weapon attacks handle weak targets; reserve the limited burst for an important hit or a favorable critical opportunity.

2First payoff
Extra Attack and Aura of Protection

Level 5 adds Extra Attack and Vengeance mobility/control tools; level 6 supplies Aura of Protection. Keep vulnerable allies close enough when the aura helps, without clustering everyone for enemy area attacks. Smite damage is not a reason to ignore immunity or radiant retaliation.

3Mature
Improved Divine Smite at level 11

Pure Paladin eventually adds Improved Divine Smite to melee hits and keeps a broader defensive foundation. Upgraded weapons and a reliable hit chance remain necessary. Spending every slot in one fight leaves fewer options for the next, even though passive damage continues after the slots are exhausted.

Strengths, tradeoffs & requirements

Strengths
  • Burst can follow confirmed hits
  • Armour and aura support survival
  • Good party-face potential
Tradeoffs
  • Smite drains long-rest spell slots
  • Oath choices can complicate resets
  • Melee and radiant damage need matchup checks
Plan around these requirements
  • Paladin level 2 for Divine Smite
  • Charisma investment for aura and dialogue
  • Oath maintained or separately restored

Party

The supporting roles that make this style work.

Light cleric

Bless, recovery and radiant area pressure support weapon accuracy and failed saves.

Wizard

Control, Counterspell and spells outside your own damage type cover resistant targets.

Bard or rogue

Conversation, locks and traps cover low Charisma or missing expertise.

CARRIED INTO YOUR WALKTHROUGH

What to prioritize

  1. Explain oath consequences beside relevant choices
  2. Configure smite reactions early
  3. Keep level-6 aura positioning in fight guidance

Can you change your mind? After recruiting Withers, pay 100 gold to rebuild class and ability scores. Keep enough gear for the new proficiencies; race, origin and story choices do not reset. An oathbreaker must resolve the separate oath-restoration restriction before an ordinary class reset.

Walkthrough fact checks · 2026-10-10

Source-based audit with documented gaps. Section screening is not individual fact verification, and no complete current-version playthrough is claimed.

Corrections in this review · may contain spoilers
  • The page documents a recruitment route after clearing the goblin camp. The existing deadline implies a universal lockout. Reference
  • The current instruction omits the Honour mate/death-order failure case and does not explain how to preserve a hostile cub. Reference
  • Hellfire Hand Crossbow is Yurgir-carried loot. The release branch is not the same acquisition route as his death. Reference
  • The sacrifice option needs the material Gale-specific campaign-ending consequence beside the choice. Reference
  • The current branch understates an irreversible companion loss. Reference
  • This is a permanent companion loss rather than merely jeopardized loyalty. Reference
  • Keep the generated outcome message consistent with the irreversible branch consequence. Reference
  • Generated branch guidance understates a permanent companion loss. Reference
  • The item page specifically requires picking up the quest from Lora before freeing Vanra. The local walkthrough already includes this, but the standalone gear instruction omits it. Reference
  • The gloves grant Two-Weapon Fighting damage, while Thief Fast Hands supplies the extra bonus action. Reference
  • Propagate the source of the bonus action accurately. Reference
  • Propagate the acquisition prerequisite into the coaching item. Reference
  • The current Owlbear Cub and achievement descriptions do not establish a current Speak with Animals failure condition. Historical workaround advice must not be promoted to a required current rule. Reference
  • The conditional no-transformation Gale route was not independently established by the primary quest passages read; the guide appropriately makes it conditional, but precise dialogue prerequisites remain unverified. Reference
Remaining verification
  • Several alternative ending, recruitment and achievement methods still depend on hidden flags that were not reproduced in a current save.
  • Source checks cover selected assertions inside compound instructions. They do not independently establish every sentence, traversal detail or alternate dialogue sequence.

Before you commit: Major Act III investigations have expanded pickup and outcome directions; smaller city cases and Origin-exclusive variations still have selective coverage.

Coverage limits, evidence dates & corrections
  • Honour save rules and mutually exclusive endings prevent a guaranteed single-campaign 100% promise.
  • Advanced build assumptions, permanent bonuses and competing equipment need the selected party plan; no maximum-difficulty clear or damage benchmark is claimed.

Next small tasks

  1. Explore the starting chambers, recruit Us without mutilating it, and heal at restoration devices. Free Shadowheart using the Eldritch Rune from the adjoining room or an available class solution.
  2. Before entering the helm, prepare Command on Shadowheart if you want to attempt Command: Drop against Commander Zhalk. Pick up the Everburn Blade after a successful disarm.
  3. At the helm, keep a character moving toward the transponder while others attack. Kill Zhalk only if the remaining turns and party health support it; interacting with the transponder ends the prologue.
Playthrough profiles and portable progress

Each profile keeps its own build, actual outcomes, equipment and checklists. Up to eight profiles per game.

Use the guide’s progress backup to transfer all profiles between the website and offline copies. The website stores signed-in progress. Downloads keep a separate browser record.

Your actual character, equipment or settlement

Record only information that affects your next decision. Blank fields mean unknown. These entries describe your game and never change it.

Copy actual ability scores after respecs, equipment changes or permanent rewards. These values record your game and do not replace the build’s suggested creation table.

Use the existing character and supporting-party panels for level picks, companion roles and unique-item allocation. Mark an item owned only after acquisition; owned does not prove it is equipped by the intended person.

Record story outcomes after they happen. A planned rescue, romance or ending is not proof that its prerequisites survived.

For Honour or achievement-specific play, read the local encounter restrictions and preserve their uncertainty. This journal does not verify difficulty integrity or platform unlocks.

Equipment and resources for this plan

+1 AC and saves. Acquisition: Buy while the inn remains accessible. Timing: Trader survival matters.

Alternative and sources

Any available cloak.

Source reference

Reliable +1 two-handed weapon and a defensive concentration spell. Acquisition: Support Karlach, defeat Anders and loot him. Timing: The encounter is dangerous at very low level.

Alternative and sources

Any +1 greatsword.

Source reference

Its invisible-weapon benefit helps land Great Weapon Master attacks. Acquisition: Buy before the crèche becomes hostile. Timing: A miss temporarily removes its invisibility benefit.

Alternative and sources

Keep .

Source reference

Strong heavy armour with critical-hit protection. Acquisition: Use Splint Mould plus Mithral Ore and complete the encounter. Timing: Forge resources are limited; share two crafts across the party.

Alternative and sources

Good splint or plate armour.

Source reference

Excellent heavy armour with sustained physical protection. Acquisition: Buy if Dammon survived Acts 1 and 2. Timing: Unavailable if Dammon died; expensive.

Alternative and sources

Keep .

Source reference

Late two-handed damage upgrade that rewards natural Strength. Acquisition: Complete the Wyrmway route and defeat Ansur; loot the sword. Timing: A difficult optional boss; prepare before attempting.

Alternative and sources

Keep .

Source reference

A stored critical hit after a kill; reserve for a smite. Acquisition: Defeat your trial copy and search the ground near the brazier. Timing: Collect before leaving the trial.

Alternative and sources

Readiness and recovery checks

Use these checks before moving to harder content or expanding. They are manual observations, separate from platform achievements.

Recover a build with missing equipment

Use the named alternative on the missing item and check who in the party owns the unique copy. An advanced multiclass can remain on its working earlier setup until the key item arrives.

Check the real state of a Moonrise rescue

Inspect the prisoners’ current state and whether Shadowfell has been entered. If the rescue window is closed, record the loss and use a valid earlier branch if desired; do not mark the rescue complete because the plan selected it.

Recover from losing Last Light

Record the actual Isobel/Last Light outcome, review affected NPCs and rewards, and change unavailable gear to its fallback. A journal correction does not restore people or merchants.

Recover a blocked city rescue

Compare the current Gortash, Foundry and Iron Throne state with this route. Preserve the existing save before experimenting; use an earlier valid checkpoint if an irreversible action closed the rescue.

Patch 8 is the feature baseline. The readable Larian September 29, 2026 hotfix post gives version 4.1.1.7631656; this verifies that release, not the latest version on every installed PC.

Achievement names and counts were compared with public Steam records. Quest outcomes and hardest-difficulty builds were sampled from sources, not validated by a completed playthrough.

Authored coaching from the existing BG3 route, structured equipment alternatives and cited companion/build guidance. The date records the data/anchor review, not a new hands-on playthrough or fresh verification of every page. Rules use manual records, never the game save, and cannot certify every quest flag, romance, difficulty state or achievement. Existing guide coverage: Steam PC roster checked 8 October 2026: all 54 achievements, including Foehammer; console-only platinum trophies are excluded. Act labels show the main achievement stage, not the earliest prerequisite: always read the deadline. Missable marks an early or irreversible lock; other objectives still need completion before the finale. Conflicts identify mutually exclusive ending outcomes on one branch; conditional story costs appear in the steps. Ordinary campaigns can preserve alternate saves; Honour cannot use that plan. This guide does not promise all achievements in one uninterrupted run. It is researched guidance, not an in-game unlock test. Twelve complete level 1–12 single-class paths for an unmodded PC game under Patch 8, researched 8 October 2026. These are strong, coherent recommendations, not a claim that every class is equally strong or mathematically optimal. All starting scores use legal 27-point buy plus the freely assigned +2/+1. The original twelve single-class recipes require no permanent quest bonuses, Withers resets, illithid powers, consumable loops or Strength elixirs; every level in those original recipes remains in its named class. 'Learn' is a permanent spell choice; prepared casters receive a recommended core to prepare and may use remaining slots for situational spells. Auto-granted features are labelled. Gear is a progression of alternatives, not an instruction to equip multiple items in one slot. These items are usually usable by other classes and exist once per campaign; allocate contested items across the party. Acts and levels are independent: collect gear when its region is reached, not at a promised character level. Item acquisition reveals locations and limited quest outcomes. Creation assumes a custom character; Origin characters and companions have fixed races/backgrounds, so adapt those skill selections if respeccing them. A curated, spoiler-rich route for a fresh, unmodded PC campaign: 56 ordered stops from the Nautiloid to the epilogue, with major quests, companion arcs, rescue dependencies, rare equipment, and achievement opportunities. This is not an exhaustive catalogue of every minor quest, container, dialogue permutation, or Origin-exclusive scene. Level ranges are recommendations, not access requirements. Choice panels remain available regardless of the route you intend to follow; incompatible outcomes require alternate normal-mode saves or separate campaigns. Honour uses one save and does not support ordinary reload branches. Achievement labels identify opportunities and dependencies, not automatic unlocks; consult the dedicated achievement details. Location links open real wiki maps and image reference pages. Map and picture buttons open verified location references. This edition does not embed game maps or track your live save. Optional city investigations are concise compared with the major quest chains. Companion support adds recommended parties for all 16 supplied builds, ten recruitable companion profiles, level 1–12 recipes, manual party selection per build, and shared-item allocation. Party selections do not detect recruitment or game-save state. The unified walkthrough was expanded on 9 October 2026 with 436 supporting directions, inline party leveling, per-step equipment and story decisions, and achievement controls at each relevant stop. Alternate-path instructions adapt at major branch points; follow the actual journal when previous NPC losses change availability. Four advanced multiclass plans now complement the twelve single-class recipes. The Bard hybrids use a planned Withers reset, and the advanced Monk includes a daily Strength-elixir route plus a legal no-elixir fallback. All four preserve the same achievement and story route, include full level 1–12 progression and companion support, and are researched recommendations rather than personal gameplay benchmarks.

Coaching review: 2026-10-09 · Synthesis of cited guide sources. Guide checks do not claim a personal completion playthrough.

  • Actual outcomes are separate from intended outcomes.
  • Named profiles preserve separate campaigns.
  • Stable task checkpoints preserve existing completion records.
  • Online and offline editions share the same interface.

Choose your character build

Choose a class or an advanced multiclass plan before following the Nautiloid-to-finale walkthrough. Your level-up picks, supporting companions and priority equipment change with this selection.

The Vengeance Oathkeeper

A heavy-armour striker who converts confirmed hits into smite damage and protects nearby allies with a saving-throw aura. Vengeance supplies tools for reaching and focusing important targets.

Starting race: Half-Orc · Background: Guild Artisan

Supporting party: Shadowheart · Astarion · Gale

BEFORE YOU SET OUTChoose your build, party, achievements and planned outcomesOptional planning tools. Your choices follow you into the walkthrough below.

These settings describe your game; they do not change it. Choose from 13 single-class recipes and 4 advanced multiclass plans. Each includes progression, equipment and a supporting party.

Compare all 17 character builds

The Returning-Pike Berserker

Accurate ranged damage • sturdy front line · Approachable

Throw a returning weapon with exceptional accuracy, then knock a dangerous enemy down with your bonus action. A very strong early power spike with a simple daily routine.

  • Tavern Brawler comes online at level 4.
  • Good damage without Strength elixirs.
  • Useful control from Enraged Throw.

Tradeoffs: Single-class Berserker has fewer bonus actions than a Thief multiclass. Throwing trajectories can fail indoors or across railings. Rage competes for the opening bonus action; dialogue checks are a weak point.

The Swords Bard Archer

Ranged damage • party face • encounter control · Moderate

A strong all-round main character: accurate bow attacks, excellent conversation skills and late-game control spells cast after attacking. You grow into the full combination as its gear appears.

  • Handles dialogue and locks while contributing serious damage.
  • Short rests refresh flourishes from level 5.
  • Arcane Acuity plus Mystic Scoundrel produces exceptional late control.

Tradeoffs: Extra Attack arrives at level 6, one level later than most martial classes. The strongest attack-then-control loop needs specific Act 2 and Act 3 items. Starting Charisma 16 is enough for utility, but early control is less reliable than on a dedicated caster.

The Radiant Light Cleric

Area damage • enemy debuffs • emergency support · Moderate

Walk Spirit Guardians through enemies while radiant equipment makes their attacks less reliable. You also retain healing, protection and Fireball, making this a powerful support who actively ends fights.

  • Spirit Guardians and Radiating Orb equipment work together early.
  • Strong area damage without abandoning support.
  • Warding Flare protects the party through reactions.

Tradeoffs: Concentration and positioning matter more than weapon attacks. Radiant-retaliation enemies require a different damage plan. Several strong items compete with other casters or healers.

The Stars Druid Controller

Terrain control • summons • flexible healing · Moderate

Use the Patch 8 Stars subclass to protect concentration, add radiant attacks and guide the party through difficult fights. This path emphasizes spellcasting, with animal shapes reserved for exploration or emergencies.

  • Dragon form supports dependable concentration.
  • Excellent control spells and long-lasting summons.
  • Archer and Chalice forms add flexible damage or recovery.

Tradeoffs: Summons add turns and management. You must choose one concentration spell at a time. Stars is a caster path; animal-form gear and Tavern Brawler advice are not automatically relevant.

The Battle Master Captain

Melee damage • dependable front line · Approachable

A heavy-armour warrior who hits hard, controls priority targets and recovers key resources on a short rest. A strong first-campaign choice with a very powerful level 11.

  • Straightforward turns and strong armour.
  • Four feats make permanent stats easy to develop.
  • Three attacks per normal action at level 11.

Tradeoffs: Limited magical utility and weaker conversation skills. Great Weapon Master needs sensible accuracy management. Short-rest resources still need to be spent deliberately.

The Open Hand Martial Artist

Mobile melee damage • single-target disruption · Approachable

A fast Dexterity-and-Wisdom monk with reliable defence, many attacks and useful stuns. This is a strong self-sufficient path, with less peak damage than a Strength-elixir Tavern Brawler variant.

  • No daily elixir shopping or stat-reset routine.
  • Fast movement and control help reach enemy casters.
  • Short rests restore ki; Open Hand gains valuable damage at level 6.

Tradeoffs: Not the maximum-damage Tavern Brawler version. Melee positioning matters with lighter defences. Bonus actions compete between damage, defence and movement.

The Vengeance Oathkeeper

Melee burst • protective auras • conversation · Moderate

A heavy-armour striker who converts confirmed hits into smite damage and protects nearby allies with a saving-throw aura. Vengeance supplies tools for reaching and focusing important targets.

  • Excellent burst damage on critical hits.
  • Charisma supports dialogue and Aura of Protection.
  • Healing and protection remain available when damage is not the right answer.

Tradeoffs: Smite spending can exhaust spell slots quickly. Oath-breaking choices have gameplay consequences. Strength, Charisma and Constitution compete for investment.

The Hunter Volley Archer

Sustained ranged damage • exploration • late area attacks · Approachable

A sturdy archer with useful exploration skills and terrain magic. Hunter develops steadily, then gains a major late payoff when Volley lets bow attacks hit clustered enemies.

  • Archery style supports Sharpshooter accuracy.
  • Useful movement, scouting and battlefield terrain.
  • Volley is a very strong single-class reward at level 11.

Tradeoffs: Gloom Stalker has a stronger opening burst earlier in the campaign. Hunter's defining area attack arrives late. Titanstring needs the Strength club equipped to reach the listed setup.

The Thief Crossbow Scout

Locks and traps • mobile ranged damage · Approachable

A highly capable explorer who lands one strong Sneak Attack and uses two bonus actions for offhand shots or escape. Strong utility and consistent contributions, with a lower damage ceiling than optimized martial multiclasses.

  • Excellent locks, traps and stealth.
  • Two bonus actions make repositioning forgiving.
  • Reliable Talent makes trained skills exceptionally dependable late.

Tradeoffs: Pure Rogue does not gain Extra Attack. Sneak Attack normally contributes once per turn, not to every bolt. Offhand damage improves significantly only after obtaining the right gloves.

The Gold Dragon Firecaster

Spell burst • control • party face · Moderate

Scorching Ray and fire spells grow into powerful burst damage, while metamagic reshapes your turns. Fire Acuity is an optional power increase; the spell list retains alternatives when fire is ineffective.

  • Draconic resilience makes a new caster less fragile.
  • Quickened Spell enables strong decisive turns.
  • Charisma supports dialogue and fire damage from level 6.

Tradeoffs: Few known spells make choices more consequential than on a Wizard. Sorcery points and slots disappear quickly when overused. Fire resistance and immunity require alternative spells or support turns.

The Fiend Tome Blaster

Repeatable ranged damage • battlefield control • party face · Approachable

A straightforward caster whose normal attack is Eldritch Blast. Spend a short-rest spell slot to control the field, then push enemies back into danger while the party finishes them.

  • Eldritch Blast remains useful without spending slots.
  • Short rests restore Pact Magic.
  • Hunger of Hadar and forced movement make a strong team combination.

Tradeoffs: Very few spell slots at a time. Potent Robe is a major optional upgrade with strict quest requirements. Tome does not provide the melee features of Pact of the Blade.

The Evocation Spellbook

Flexible magic • area damage • battlefield control · Moderate

A prepared caster with an expanding spellbook and safer area evocations around allies. Use the right tool for the encounter rather than trying to solve everything with one spell.

  • Learns extra spells from scrolls.
  • Sculpt Spells makes many area evocations easier to position.
  • Excellent late-game flexibility and level-10 damage.

Tradeoffs: Preparation and concentration require attention. Still fragile if isolated or caught without defensive resources. Sculpt Spells does not make every spell or surface safe for allies.

Advanced · Control Archer (10 Bard / 1 Fighter / 1 Wizard)

Ranged damage, high-accuracy control, dialogue and locks · Advanced · multiclass

A well-established Honour archetype: weapon hits build Arcane Acuity, then the Act 3 ring lets an enchantment or illusion use your bonus action. The Fighter start after a level-8 reset protects concentration; one Wizard level adds prepared utility. The complete package arrives gradually, not at character creation.

  • Full Bard dialogue and skill coverage with a strong ranged turn.
  • Acuity control and a normal martial damage option when control is unsuitable.
  • Shield, utility scroll learning and a sixth-level slot at character level 12.

Tradeoffs: The key helmet is in Act 2 and the bonus-action ring is in Act 3. Two feats and no Action Surge: this is Fighter 1, not Fighter 2. Wizard spells use Intelligence; a small prepared list favours spells that do not ask for an attack or saving throw. A damage-only opening can be superior when it removes the only dangerous enemy. The helmet/ring pair consumes equipment slots that could otherwise improve initiative, defense or direct damage. Retain the existing legal Fighter/Wizard/Bard reset and spellcasting-ability explanation.

Advanced · Smite Duelist (10 Bard / 2 Paladin)

Melee burst, dialogue and weapon-fed control · Advanced · multiclass

A completion-friendly Dexterity version of the famous Smite Swords Bard. Level as a conventional Paladin first; at level 8 rebuild into Paladin 2 / Swords Bard 6. You retain Extra Attack, gain many more smite slots and later turn weapon hits into bonus-action control. The default gear route keeps rescue and companion outcomes available.

  • Divine Smite on confirmed hits plus short-rest flourishes.
  • Strong dialogue, lock expertise after the reset and full-caster slot progression by the end.
  • Core damage works without sacrificing Aylin or becoming a Bhaalist.

Tradeoffs: The level-8 reset removes Paladin auras and Vow of Enmity; do not keep playing as though you still have them. Smites and control spend the same spell slots, so frequent all-in bursts require rest supplies. Good-route equipment trades away the evil piercing-vulnerability ceiling rather than claiming identical damage.

Advanced · Fire Acuity (11 Sorcerer / 1 Warlock)

Fire burst and multi-target Command control · Advanced · multiclass

The renowned Fire Sorlock uses successive Scorching Ray hits to raise spell accuracy and save DC with the Act 2 fire hat. A single Fiend level supplies Command; metamagic then lets you damage and control within one turn. It is powerful but spends slots and sorcery points quickly and requires a clear Strange Ox story decision.

  • Scorching Ray naturally feeds the hat before the control cast.
  • Command can disable several eligible enemies without concentration when upcast.
  • Retains sixth-level Sorcerer spells and Constitution-save proficiency.

Tradeoffs: The hat requires killing the Strange Ox in Act 2 or 3, forfeiting its later ally path. Fire immunity, Wet targets and attacks that miss can undermine the opening. Warlock 1 has no Agonising Blast invocation; this is not the usual Eldritch Blast Sorlock. The Strange Ox hat route retains its existing narrative cost; it is not a consequence-free mandatory upgrade. Extended Command controls eligible enemies for longer, but does not override target exclusions or saving throws. An extended dungeon favors conservation over repeating the most expensive opener.

Advanced · Open Hand Thief (8 Monk / 4 Rogue)

Accurate unarmed burst, mobility and priority-target control · Advanced · multiclass

A leading unarmed archetype combines Tavern Brawler with Open Hand effects and Thief's second bonus action. Keep Monk through level 6, then build toward Thief at character level 9. The high-ceiling route uses daily Strength elixirs; a practical no-elixir fallback is stated explicitly instead of treating consumables as permanent stats.

  • Excellent hit chance with Tavern Brawler and a supplied Strength elixir.
  • Two bonus actions can fund two Flurries or leave room for movement and recovery.
  • Three feats by level 12 and a straightforward set of unarmoured gear.

Tradeoffs: Full double-Flurry turns spend 2 Ki; extra bonus actions do not create unlimited resources. Daily Strength elixirs cost supplies and replace other elixir effects. Melee range and low Charisma require party support; the final split gives up Monk 9 and later Monk features.

Hexblade Warlock 12

Charisma spellblade with ranged fallback · Moderate

Bind a weapon to Charisma and become a party face who can fight up close without splitting investment into Strength. Medium armour and shield proficiency make the opening practical, while Eldritch Blast supplies range. Pure Hexblade keeps short-rest casting and later defensive features; it is a versatile Patch 8 addition rather than a proven universal damage winner.

  • Charisma covers melee and dialogue
  • Armour/shield proficiency supports opening
  • Eldritch Blast remains a range option

Tradeoffs: Bound weapon cannot be thrown Limited pact slots demand rest discipline Reaction defenses compete with other responses

The Vengeance Oathkeeper · character setup

A heavy-armour striker who converts confirmed hits into smite damage and protects nearby allies with a saving-throw aura. Vengeance supplies tools for reaching and focusing important targets.

Race: Half-Orc

Background: Guild Artisan

STR16
DEX10
CON14
INT8
WIS10
CHA16

Skills: Background: Insight, Persuasion, Class: Athletics, Religion, Race: Intimidation

  • +2 STR and +1 CHA. Base point-buy: 14 / 10 / 14 / 8 / 10 / 15.
  • Choose Oath of Vengeance at creation; read its tenets before major decisions.
  • Wear heavy armour and wield a two-handed weapon. Set Divine Smite and critical-hit smites to Ask.
Honour and difficult-fight notes
  • Radiant retaliation can punish smites and the level-11 passive; examine enemies first.
  • Haste does not produce another complete Extra Attack action in Honour.
  • Breaking an oath can restrict normal respec access until the oath is restored; this guide assumes you keep Vengeance.

Level-up selections appear inside each walkthrough stop. Choose any level there to review earlier picks or plan ahead.

Resolve these targets before starting

  • Difficulty achievements are still targeted. Balanced, Explorer and Custom are not a qualifying Tactician/Honour completion plan; read those entries before starting.
  • Foehammer needs an Honour campaign. Defer it for a separate run or start the game on Honour.
  • Dark Urge achievements are targeted, but the selected origin cannot earn them. Defer those goals or choose Dark Urge before creating the character.
  • Some targets require separate outcomes or campaigns: Absolute Power Corrupts / Hero of the Forgotten Realms; Absolute Power Corrupts / Sins of the Father; Hero of the Forgotten Realms / Sins of the Father.

Useful habits, mechanics and research coverage

Use your four characters as a team

Bring reliable damage, a control caster, support and someone who handles locks and traps. These are roles, not mandatory classes. A Bard can cover dialogue and locks; a Cleric can both protect the group and deal damage. Avoid giving several characters builds that all need the same unique equipment. The party suggestions under each class are starting points, not restrictions.

Rest for resources and companion scenes

Many camp conversations and relationship scenes need long rests. Do not avoid resting for the whole act. Finish a visibly urgent rescue or local timer first, then rest and speak to companions. A partial rest can advance camp scenes without spending supplies, but it gives only limited resource recovery and does not restore short rests.

Protect concentration

Each caster can maintain one concentration spell. Casting another ends the first, even if the new spell is only Guidance. Damage can force a Constitution save; falling prone and several disabling conditions can also break concentration. Protect a character maintaining Haste, because losing it disrupts the affected ally. Check the concentration tag before every follow-up spell.

Respec deliberately

Withers can rebuild a party member's class and ability scores for 100 gold once available at camp. You can fix a build without starting over. Keep the character pursuing Jack-of-all-Trades separate from routine respecs and use that achievement's instructions. Character origin and its story are a different decision from combat class.

Choose your origin before making the run

Custom Tav gives you a custom protagonist. The Dark Urge adds a personal story and unique risks and achievements. An Origin companion makes that companion your protagonist. This guide keeps the origin choice separate from class: choosing a class does not turn Tav into the Dark Urge. Check the achievement conflicts before character creation.

Keep a route and an account checklist separate

An achievement already earned on your account does not prove its quest is complete in this campaign. Mark achievements as earned only when your game platform confirms them. Route checkboxes describe this run. The guide highlights remaining targets while retaining the story path and prerequisite warnings.

Use the journal when the world differs

This is a researched route, not a live reading of your save. NPC deaths, failed rolls and quest order can change what is available. Record the outcome you actually got, read the local alternatives and keep a recovery save where the difficulty permits it. On Honour, plan around one continuing outcome rather than reload branches.

Turn strong equipment into a coherent build

Before equipping an item, check proficiency, armour restrictions, concentration, action cost and which equipment slot it occupies. A highly rated item can be wrong for your current build. Read each item's acquisition and alternative: do not sacrifice a companion, quest or achievement just because an item appears in the recommended list.

How this guide was checked

PC content is organized around Patch 8. The latest official update checked for this edition is the small hotfix dated 29 September 2026, version 4.1.1.7631656. Core build and achievement research was reviewed on 8 October 2026; the walkthrough was expanded on 9 October 2026. Builds are curated recommendations, and reported or disputed triggers are labeled. The guide does not read your game, unlock achievements, or automatically synchronize Steam.

Achievements and mods

Larian disables achievements when mods are active, including mods from the in-game browser. This guide assumes an unmodded, achievement-eligible campaign. Third-party achievement-enabling workarounds are outside its verified scope. Check your actual platform unlocks rather than treating a checked guide box as proof.

Optional illithid power plan

The class builds work without spending parasites. If you choose to use them, Favourable Beginnings followed by Luck of the Far Realms is a useful early path for attack-based builds; set the critical-hit reaction to ask before use. Concentrated Blast opens access to Cull the Weak, but casting the blast ends your current concentration. Ordinary parasite investment can make refusing the later Astral-Touched Tadpole require a Wisdom save. Partial transformation changes your appearance and unlocks Fly plus access to stronger powers; it is separate from the final decision to become a full mind flayer. Read the Astral Prism choice panel before accepting.

A researched guide for a fresh, unmodded PC campaign: 56 ordered stops cover the main story, major companion arcs, rescue dependencies, distinctive equipment and opportunities for all 54 Steam achievements. The achievement roster was checked in October 2026; an instruction or checked box is not proof of an in-game unlock. Smaller city cases and Origin-exclusive scenes have selective coverage. This is not an inventory of every container, dialogue or side interaction. The 17 builds comprise thirteen single-class and four advanced multiclass plans, each with level 1–12 progression and companion support. Starting ability scores use legal 27-point buy with +2/+1. Single-class recipes do not require permanent quest bonuses, Withers resets, illithid powers or Strength elixirs. The advanced Bard plans include a planned Withers reset; the advanced Monk has a daily Strength-elixir route and a no-elixir fallback. Read each plan's requirements before selecting it. These are coherent recommendations, not personally benchmarked claims of a universal strongest build. Creation assumes a custom character. Origin characters and companions have fixed races and backgrounds; adapt skill selections when respeccing them. Learned spells are permanent selections, while prepared-spell lists are suggested cores. Gear lists describe alternatives for the same slot. Assign a scarce item to one party member and give the others their listed substitutes. Party controls do not detect recruitment, item ownership or your game save. Follow the walkthrough by region and quest state, not by a promised character level. Read a choice before committing and confirm the result afterward. Ordinary campaigns can preserve alternate saves; Honour uses a single save and cannot follow normal reload branches. Incompatible endings and some rewards require another branch or campaign. The route does not promise every achievement in one uninterrupted playthrough. Patch 8 remains the final major content baseline. Larian's 29 September 2026 hotfix announcement explicitly identifies version 4.1.1.7631656; that primary release note was read on 10 October. It is the latest release receipt verified for this guide, not a guarantee that no newer platform build exists. Relevant source records distinguish publisher notes from community quest references. Named locations link to external navigation references; decorative illustrations are not game maps. The instructions and all difficulty/build results have not been independently replayed in-game.

Reviewed 2026-10-11 · Guide 1.3-route-depth. This is a researched guide, not a personally tested promise of every possible game state.
