Game settings

Note the world and embark you want to use, including terrain, enemy pressure and any population limit. A fortress goal can grow or change after embark.

These controls record your game and guide preferences. Change actual game settings in the game.

What would you like your fortress to become?

Choose any combination of fortress goals and revise them as your world develops. A stable home, trade hub, defended city, engineering project or royal ambition can all be worthwhile. There is no fixed winning ending to select.

Combine these priorities freely. They record your priorities. Story decisions remain available at their quests; these notes do not mark achievements earned.

A thriving small settlement, a trading city or a vast engineering project can each be your goal. Combine ambitions and keep playing for as long as you enjoy the fortress.

Rules, recommendations and what is still uncertain

Recommended plan

Room sizes and reserves are planning examples

The starting doctrine, room dimensions and staffing targets are authored plans. Adjust them to your site, population, materials and observed production.

They are not proven universal optima or mandatory dimensions.

Official version context

A sealed gate is not an invulnerability guarantee

The current siege system supports threats that can bypass older static defenses. Retain an internal fallback and inspect approaches after expansion.

No fortress save or defensive drill was run in this review.

Choose a fortress planSuggested plan: Bastion Commonwealth

Find a style that fits your priorities

Choose the fortress you want to maintain. Bastion Commonwealth combines a guarded trading hub with a growing military; the other doctrines emphasize commerce, campaigning, engineering or royal ambition. You can change priorities without starting over.

Reorder the comparison without changing your game settings or story preferences.

A guarded trading hub with a sustainable army

Bastion Commonwealth

Grow seven settlers into a city that buys missing inputs, exports genuine surplus and maintains trained defenders at home. The route connects food and industry to first trade, a five-person guard, a staffed commercial hub and a separate expedition force. Expansion waits for observed reserves and available workers. Peaceful trade remains a valid long-term choice; military strength does not require constant conquest.

Learning curveModerate

There are many systems, but the plan introduces one complete service at a time.

Choose this when you wantA first successful fortress · Combining a trading hub with a powerful home guard · Building an empire that survives a missed caravan

Reconsider if: You want an immediate war of conquest; You want a huge monument before basic services.

What running it feels like

A practical rhythm, from preparation to payoff.

1
Read the bottleneck

Pause and check whether food, drink, beds or hauling access is failing. Fix the missing link before issuing another large excavation order.

2
Complete one service

Build the room, its furniture and its work assignment together. Confirm a job finishes and the output reaches an accessible stockpile before calling the system ready.

3
Grow deliberately

Add residents or industry only when the previous service has headroom. Repeat a short closed-gate rehearsal so supplies are usable from inside.

Illustrative play example
Example: a migrant wave arrives

Instead of expanding every industry, pause and inspect beds, prepared food, drinks and the route to each stockpile. Add a compact bedroom block and enough furniture for the new residents, then assign a few to the current bottleneck. Recheck brewing after the first extra jobs finish. This is an illustrative operating sequence, not a claim that one room count feeds every possible fortress.

FROM A REALISTIC START TO THE PAYOFF

Your settlement plan

Read in order. Each stage explains what makes the next step practical.

1Opening
Seven dwarves: a working core

A starter plan can use a 7×5 dining interior, 5×5 farm/still spaces and a 3×3 office, joined by short corridors. These are authored planning dimensions, not mandatory game minima.

2First payoff
Around twenty: reliable work orders

Around twenty, establish conditional work orders, a protected depot flow and backup labor. Start the first five-person guard only from adults you can spare; verify purchases reach the workshop that needs them.

3Mature
Around fifty: protected services

Around fifty, aim for a complete ten-person home squad while maintaining clothes, healthcare and recurring imports. Repeat the closed-gate test and review actual stocks before accepting more residents.

4Optional ceiling
Around one hundred: resilient capital

Around one hundred, the example supports two ten-person home squads and a specialized trading district. A separate expedition force comes later only if the remaining workforce and defenders pass their checks. These are planning targets, not game unlocks or guaranteed siege requirements.

Guide progression diagram — an authored explanation, not an official skill tree or measured ranking.

SHARED STARTER EXAMPLETop down · one square = one tile
The same 26 by 17 tile starter floor used in the walkthrough: eight connected rooms, a three-tile-wide corridor, one-tile doorways, and measured furniture footprints.
Ordinary mined stone walls are sufficient to start. Build furniture from suitable local materials. This is a shared example; your chosen doctrine changes priorities, not the dimensions of this drawing.

Strengths, tradeoffs & requirements

Strengths
  • Trade directly supports equipment and production shortages
  • Home defense stays separate from later expedition forces
  • Food, medical care and essential workers remain protected during growth
Tradeoffs
  • Expansion feels slower than a rush
  • Requires periodic checks of actual stock and access
  • A closed gate is not proof of immunity under siege mechanics
Plan around these requirements
  • A manageable embark with water, soil, wood and reachable resources
  • A sustainable food/drink chain and protected seed stock
  • A working home guard before sending anyone away

Workforce priorities

The supporting roles that make this style work.

Two initial miners

Establish the core; avoid letting a huge dig consume every urgent task.

Food and drink workers

Keep growing and brewing staffed rather than drafting every useful worker.

Manager, broker and medical coverage

Roles can overlap early, but critical work must have available dwarves and actual rooms.

CARRIED INTO YOUR WALKTHROUGH

What to prioritize

  1. Choose a forgiving embark and deliberate seven-dwarf skill coverage first.
  2. Put room dimensions, furniture and material bills before excavation.
  3. Require observed working output before the next population stage.

Can you change your mind? There is no class lock. Preserve the working core and reassign surplus labor to a new direction; expanding into a merchant or military fortress should not dismantle its food, water or medical services.

Source-based strategy

An authored recommendation grounded in the linked mechanics; no measured gameplay benchmark is claimed.

All five fortress strategies retain documented labor, materials, trade and infrastructure requirements. Source access was refreshed while unresolved monarch-trigger wording remains identified.

This is a source review of build dependencies, not an in-game playthrough or damage benchmark. It does not certify every quest, achievement trigger, random drop or installed mod.

Reviewed plans and corrections
  • Bastion Commonwealth · Retained. Economy, manager work orders, seed/drink reserves and protected water remain valid; no invulnerable closed-gate assumption.
  • Merchant League · Retained. 53.x trade and messenger prerequisites are respected; self-sufficiency remains available.
  • Steel March · Retained. Steel/flux/fuel and military prerequisites remain valid; paired steel recipe and magma carbon requirement are correct.
  • Deep Crown · Retained. Capital and optional true Mountainhome are separated. Retain explicit uncertainty around the wiki's contradictory City/Metropolis trigger wording.
  • The Engineer’s City · Retained. Pump/access/power and liquid-safety advice remains valid.
Outdated or unsupported advice excluded
  • A closed entrance does not make a fortress invulnerable under current siege rules.
  • The contradictory City/Metropolis monarch trigger is not stated as one guaranteed population threshold.

Embark, rooms, farming, brewing, workshops, medical care, steel, defenses, trade, holdings and royal progression were screened. Selected mechanics and material arithmetic were checked against current wiki and developer records.

Corrections in this review · may contain spoilers
  • Buying soap is contradicted by the current Soap source and by the guide hospital section and practical soap plan. Reference
  • The starter and bedroom ASCII plans retain the final east column as rock; SVG currently mines the hallway through it. Close that column for those two modes to match their authored plans. Workshop/industry extension geometry remains unchanged. Reference
Remaining verification
  • Monarch promotion sources disagree about some thresholds; the guide retains that disagreement at the relevant step.
  • Stock targets and layouts are authored planning recommendations, not guaranteed survival or promotion thresholds.
  • Hydraulics, sieges, world events and every generated civilization condition require inspection of the actual fortress.
Sources and what they support
  • Dwarf Fortress: official — 53.16 release date; digging/building/rams; bolt thrower ordinary bolts and operator behind; reinforced wall 2 building materials plus 1 metal; no static bridge immunity.

Primary release and development evidence; does not establish every numerical route condition.

  • Dwarf Fortress: diplomacy — Messenger peace, war, contact and trade missions; monarch needed for alliances.

Reproduces developer patch notes. Mission success in a generated world is not guaranteed.

  • Dwarf Fortress: siege — Current siege threat capabilities, wall recipe and siege-engine targeting changes.

Primary notes crosschecked with Bay 12 official log; not a tactical performance test.

  • Dwarf Fortress: orders — Conditions are AND; empty food-storage containers require the right item/Adjective selection; paired shoes/gauntlets need output-aware counts.

Interface page contains migration-era notes; all local click sequences not replayed.

  • Dwarf Fortress: farming — Soil/mud placement; each season separately; cooking loses seeds; brewing/raw eating returns seed; soil-layer yield reduced even with mud.

No claim that a 3x3 plot sustains a fixed population; yield is variable.

  • Dwarf Fortress: brewing — Still plus plant and empty watertight container; five drinks per plant; produces seeds; linked inputs and burrows affect access.

Old hotkeys/bug annotations not used as current UI authority.

  • Dwarf Fortress: health — Diagnosis precedes treatment, orderlies recover and feed patients; water/soap and medical inputs matter.

No hands-on hospital stock unit or treatment-path validation; room capacity is an authored policy.

  • Dwarf Fortress: well — Block+clean bucket+mechanism+rope/chain; 3/7 minimum; closed hatches/bars/grates obstruct; well does not purify; muddy bottom can require two water layers.

Guide hand-fill basin and pressure plan not executed; no endurance certified.

  • Dwarf Fortress: soap — Soap is not traded by caravans; lye plus tallow/oil; soap uses Bars/Soap item filtering.

Exact complete workshop/job chain supported by separate Ashery/Soap Maker pages; not a gameplay test.

  • Dwarf Fortress: ashery — One block, empty barrel and clean bucket; rough rock/log cannot replace the block.

Construction requirements only; full lye job water behavior not separately established.

  • Dwarf Fortress: soaper — Empty bucket plus non-economic building material; lye plus tallow or oil.

    No observed job completion.

  • Dwarf Fortress: steel — Two iron + two flux + four fuel produce two steel via pig iron then steel at conventional smelter; two carbon fuel with magma.

Ore smelting and later forging cost extra. No complete armor-kit ore bill established.

  • Dwarf Fortress: magma — Magma-safe construction/anvil; at least 4/7 at one noncentral tile directly below; center stays solid.

Source warns jobs cancel below 4/7 and moods can fail; this audit did not reproduce the behavior.

  • Dwarf Fortress: depot — 5x5; three materials; ten-space edge clearance; adjacent 3x4 parking; no wagon overlay; boulders/traps/tracks block access.

The specific defense drawing was not wagon-path-tested in game.

  • Dwarf Fortress: bridge — Six-tile bridge costs floor(6/4)+1=2 materials; chosen edge becomes wall; retracting over floor does not close corridor.

Source contains stale invulnerability wording rejected against official 53 siege changes.

  • Dwarf Fortress: lever — One mechanism for lever and two per device link; linked-building inspection.

Page retains old mechanism-selection remarks; not adopted as current menu proof.

  • Dwarf Fortress: baron — Default 20/100000/10000; four 500-value rooms; 2 chests,1 cabinet,1 rack,1 stand; deferrable first appointment.

Generated politics and custom settings can differ; old wagon and succession bug statements not adopted.

  • Dwarf Fortress: count — Default 20/200000/20000; four1500 rooms;3 chests,2 cabinets/racks/stands; automatic promotion after barony.

Same live-settings limitation; no promotion save run.

  • Dwarf Fortress: duke — Default20/300000/30000; four2500 rooms;5 chests,3 cabinets/racks/stands; automatic county promotion.

    Same live-settings limitation.

  • Dwarf Fortress: fortress — City110 plus200000 created OR20000 exported; Metropolis140 plus300000 OR30000; population AND one wealth.

Says City for monarch, conflicting with Monarch infobox; preserve local uncertainty.

  • Dwarf Fortress: monarch — Entourage may exceed caps; capital no normal dwarven liaison; seven symbols and throne quest.

City body vs Metropolis infobox unresolved. Royal10000 room value not independently checked in this page excerpt.

  • Dwarf Fortress: holding — Economic links procedural; historical-figure worker list; occupiers stay, administrator unavailable for normal recall.

Holding-count nobility sentence conflicts with current noble tables. Old interface controls and certain worker-site exclusions unresolved.

  • Dwarf Fortress: mission — Ambusher vs tactics; hostile mission can implicate parent civilization; failed stealth can fight; occupation/recall and blocked departure members.

Legacy holding-promotion statements rejected. No tactical formula or success probability adopted.

  • Dwarf Fortress: tribute — No broker; depot deliveries with uncontrolled content.

Explicitly migrated from DF2014 and may be inaccurate for53.16; not sufficient for current guarantee or exact yearly schedule.

  • Dwarf Fortress: volcanic — Seven divine/adamantine objects need not be artifacts; throne built in royal room; ordinary divine gear can be melted with fractions retained per smelter.

Invisible-divine-object wording is older than53.16 fix and not adopted; procedural contents and survival not guaranteed.

  • Dwarf Fortress: symbol — Nobles crown icon assigns qualifying objects; preexisting artifact quality not required.

Does not independently establish every royal acceptance case.

  • Dwarf Fortress: throne — Ordinary metal throne consumes3bars.

Nine adamantine wafers and exact royal material acceptance require separate current raw confirmation.

Before you commit: No hands-on first-winter, invasion or 53.16 end-to-end validation run is claimed.

Facts are entered manually; recommendations do not read the game save, certify achievement unlocks, or cover every possible state. Existing coverage limits: Terrain, ore, water, neighbors, migrants, artifacts and enemies vary. There are no universal coordinates, fixed cavern depths, guaranteed raid victories or guaranteed years for promotion. This is a researched route, not a claimed hands-on 53.16 playthrough. Current wiki pages sometimes retain old material; release notes and specific current UI documentation take priority. The current Holding page still links promotion to holding counts, while current noble pages use configurable population and wealth triggers. The old 1/4/9-holding ladder is excluded. Follow actual difficulty settings and liaison offers. [S52][S53][S54][S55][S56] The Monarch page conflicts over City versus Metropolis; the Fortress page says City. Fortress doctrine

Choose priorities for the same living fortress: balanced resilience, trade, expeditionary power or the royal deep. Local milestones explain what to build and prove next.

Progression plan

Bastion Commonwealth

Recommended for a lasting trade-and-military empire: grow seven settlers into a guarded commercial city, then fund a separate expedition force without stripping the home guard or essential workers.

Start with this setup
  • Choose the ordinary Normal settings and a calm, reachable site with soil, trees, water and a plausible metal supply. Keep the first population cap around 40-50.
  • Spend labor on complete essential systems before monuments. Keep construction compact enough that brewing, hauling and treatment continue during a closed-gate drill.
  • Trade pays for missing inputs; a trained home guard protects the working city. Add an expedition force only after food, medical care, replacement gear and backup workers survive a closed-gate drill.
Preview this plan from the beginning to the endgame · 12 stages
    • Accept ordinary terrain with a clear depot route rather than searching indefinitely for every possible ore.
    • Write down one workable substitute for each missing local resource.
    • Target seven sheltered settlers with recurring brew jobs and protected seed crops before another mining branch.
    • Treat falling drink counts as a workshop/container diagnosis, not a reason to build more bedrooms.
    • Add beds and reserve food before raising the cap. Start a small guard as soon as spare workers and weapons allow.
    • Keep planting and brewing covered even during construction surges.
    • Install a small staffed hospital before inviting avoidable combat.
    • Finish water and inputs; a room full of beds alone is not healthcare.
    • Keep the defensive footprint compact and inspect side, upper and underground routes.
    • Maintain an inner refuge and a guard that can respond while civilians retreat.
    • Complete a drill with food, water, beds and medicine reachable inside.
    • Use observed consumption to set the next reserve level before population growth.
    • Record each economic link and whether workers or goods actually arrived.
    • Prefer one useful neighbor to repeated speculative wars.
    • Prepare royal needs while retaining ordinary replacement stocks.
    • Finish at a stable capital if the deep quest would sacrifice the security you wanted.
    • Review the six operating figures each season and halt growth when they deteriorate.
    • Switch surplus labor into redundancy and shorter routes before another prestige district.
    • Use the trade-hub plan to separate home reserves, sale goods and incoming purchases. Buy the shortage that stops the next system first.
    • Keep the broker and essential production workers available during hauling. One successful purchase is more useful than a full depot of unneeded goods.
    • Use the roster and equipment check below. A first five-person squad grows toward a ten-person guard only as replacement civilian labor becomes available.
    • Keep the guard separate from later expedition squads. Verify worn gear, observed training and a peaceful station order.
    • Use the home/away roster below before dispatching. Home defense, brewing, food and treatment must all keep working.
    • A profitable trading city can remain peaceful. A foreign mission is optional, not a required step to make the guide count the empire complete.

Your completion route: Build a stable fortress and pursue the projects you enjoy. A small sustainable home, trade city, defended settlement, engineering project or royal ambition can each be your goal; there is no required victory ending.

Changing your doctrine keeps your saved decisions and checklists. Staffing, materials, production targets and defenses appear where you need them in the walkthrough.

Reading edition: complete empire progression with dimensioned starter, housing and industry plans. Build sizes and stock targets are guide recommendations, not game requirements. Version 53.16 and the current siege/diplomacy changes checked against Bay 12.

Verified through 53.16, released August 5, 2026, including the 53.01 Siege Update and 53.13 messenger diplomacy. Myth & Magic development material is not treated as released fortress progression.

Dwarf Fortress currently has no Steam achievement feature or official roster. This guide tracks fortress milestones, not platform achievements; the current store feature list and global-stats response contain no achievement catalog.

The route uses an unmodded Premium PC interface and Normal enemies/economy. Menu labels take precedence over remappable shortcuts. Classic key sequences, DFHack and old ammunition interfaces are not assumed.

Room sizes, reserve levels and force sizes labelled as targets are planning recommendations, not hard game requirements or guarantees against procedural enemies. Advance by readiness checks rather than a fixed calendar.

An empire means one actively managed fortress with diplomatic, economic and military relationships. Missions resolve off-map; conquered holdings do not become additional cities you can build simultaneously.

Dwarf Fortress has no Steam achievement list as of this guide’s review. Track your food reserves, industries, defenses and empire goals with the walkthrough checklists; these are personal milestones, not platform awards.

Uses the ordinary defense challenge described in this route. Combat interrupts labor and can permanently kill residents, so begin a guard early and test retreat paths. Difficulty changes later cannot undo casualties. Steam achievements are unaffected because the game has no current achievement catalog.

Enemies Off learning run

Gives more space to learn production and society. It changes the evidence: a prosperous year does not prove the fortress can handle a siege. You can revisit settings later, but build and test defenses before increasing pressure.

Calm balanced land

Soil, trees, water and local iron/flux reduce early import and engineering dependencies. This is the recommended first-empire start. The cost is accepting an ordinary site rather than a spectacular but demanding location. Embark location is not a movable base later.

Accessible trade-dependent land

Accept missing ore or flux if reachable commerce can cover it. The opening may be comfortable, but steel or construction can stall after a missed caravan. Stock imports before raising the military commitment.

Aquifer or harsh terrain

Creates an engineering campaign before the ordinary opening is complete. Light aquifers can provide water; heavy aquifers and hostile surroundings add substantial work and risk. This guide does not promise a full specialist embark solution. Rerolling before embark is the easy reversal.

Staged growth

Keep the suggested low cap while food, beds and a guard catch up, then raise it in steps. City/royal progression takes longer, but intake remains reviewable. Caps are controls rather than a guarantee against every special arrival.

Rapid growth

More workers arrive sooner and can accelerate industry and rank, but food, clothing, healthcare and pathing demand rise together. If intake outruns capacity, lower future caps and restore services; the setting does not remove residents already present.

Who may use the new public locations? · Undecided
Who may use the new public locations?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Residents first

Keep locations restricted while services mature. You still provide social and religious spaces, with less visitor intake to review. Open them later when you want a broader cultural center.

Welcome outside visitors

Visitors can enrich the fortress and petition to reside, while adding traffic and security decisions. Accept useful residents individually and protect valuables. Changing access later does not erase every existing relationship or consequence.

Open the cavern now or keep it isolated? · Undecided
Open the cavern now or keep it isolated?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Keep the branch sealed

Preserves a simpler perimeter and lets surface supplies and imported resources carry the economy. Cavern wood and opportunities remain unused for now; reopen when containment and a guard exist.

Controlled cavern access

Provides new resources and exploration but exposes additional routes and threats. Expand in stages and restrict automatic gathering/hauling. Closing one door does not prove that every connection across several levels is sealed.

Which industry heat source fits this fortress? · Undecided
Which industry heat source fits this fortress?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Fuel-powered industry

Continue charcoal/coke with a dependable wood or coal supply. It is straightforward to inspect and relocate, but consumes fuel and labor. Keep the exact steel carbon budget and ordinary heat cost visible.

Controlled magma industry

Reduces furnace/forge heat-fuel demand after a risky engineering project. Steel still needs carbon ingredients. Keep the old workshops available until the new system works; a liquid breach is not undone by deleting the job.

Accept the first landholder title? · Undecided
Accept the first landholder title?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Accept a prepared barony

Starts the noble route with room requirements, furniture, mandates and demands. Later county/duchy promotions can be automatic. Choose a manageable candidate and prepare ordinary residents before spending for prestige.

Defer until prepared

Keeps the current domestic priorities while postponing the political route. A later eligible liaison opportunity may let you continue. This is a delay, not a separate hidden achievement ending.

What should the first external relationship accomplish? · Undecided
What should the first external relationship accomplish?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Trade and diplomacy

Send a messenger to make contact and improve trade, seeking peace first when needed. This develops partners without committing an occupying force, but still requires mission success and actual caravans. War later can squander that investment.

Demand tribute

Commit a prepared force to request deliveries. Successful tribute can supplement stores, but its contents are outside your control. Failed or hostile outcomes require a political reassessment, not an assumption of free resources.

A limited military objective

Accept the risk of casualties, capture and wider war for a specified raid or occupation. Leave a separate guard home. A small target does not mean its parent civilization is small.

Raid, destroy or occupy? · Undecided
Raid, destroy or occupy?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Recover loot or captives

Use a raid/pillage objective that brings survivors home. Stealth can fail into battle; evaluate the actual report and recovered items. Dead or captured troops are not reversed by deleting the completed mission.

Destroy the settlement

Choose only when removal is the intended result. It sacrifices a potential future partner or holding and may require a longer attack. This is the most destructive branch, with no special Steam achievement attached.

Hold the settlement

Creates a military holding after success and leaves occupiers abroad. Recall depends on eligible workers and messenger completion; an administrator can remain permanently outside the home labor pool. You gain influence, not another direct construction screen.

One delivery objective or an ongoing tributary? · Undecided
One delivery objective or an ongoing tributary?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
One-time tribute

Limits the selected demand to a single tribute objective. It is useful for testing the relationship and judging actual supplies before committing to a broader network. Do not mistake an agreement for a shipment already received.

Ongoing tribute

Seeks continuing deliveries and a more durable relationship. Random contents, changing site ownership and extra traffic still constrain its usefulness. Review the relationship rather than budgeting an exact annual material yield.

Keep the capital or pursue true Mountainhome? · Undecided
Keep the capital or pursue true Mountainhome?Compare choices, rewards & consequences · spoilers
Sustain the capital

Retain a complete empire of residents, industry, army and chosen foreign links while leaving the dangerous royal deep unopened. Mountainhome remains available as a later objective; stopping here loses no Steam achievement.

Pursue the royal request

Undertake the dangerous material expedition and seven-symbol/true-throne objective. A successful result changes the in-game title, but a failed breach can destroy the fortress. Keep separate containment and a recoverable save; there is no guaranteed safe sequence.

Continue here, retire or abandon? · Undecided
Continue here, retire or abandon?Compare approaches, requirements and trade-offs
Keep managing this fortress

Preserves the active site and its ongoing systems. The next project can be a controlled improvement, an external relationship or simply a stable year. Save and exit normally when taking a real-world break.

Retire to the living world

Leaves an active world settlement that may later be unretired. Audit settings and assignments on return because this is not a perfectly preserved pause. Keep a save checkpoint before choosing it.

Abandon to ruin

Ends the inhabited-fortress run and creates a different reclaim challenge. Do not use it as a routine way to visit another screen. Reclaim brings a fresh expedition into potentially dangerous inherited conditions.

Chapter 1 of 14

Prepare seven settlers and choose the site

IN CAMPAIGN ORDER

Generate a world for a first empire

Start at the main menu. Create a world first; choosing a site and equipping your seven dwarves comes next.

1. Create New World. A Small or Medium world, roughly 100 years of history and plentiful minerals are convenient starting recommendations. Keep multiple civilizations and ordinary cavern layers. These choices ease search and production; they do not guarantee the political map.

Recommended for your trading hub and standing army: Balanced empire. Copy the values below into the game. These are guide recipes, not built-in preset names or a promise of a particular world. The comparison is researched for the unmodded PC 53.16 generation controls; checked 11 October 2026.

SettingBalanced empire: value and effect
World map sizeMedium — 129 × 129 region tiles. World extent; your fortress footprint is chosen later.
History length100 years — check the year displayed. How much history runs before you arrive.
Number of civilizationsMedium. Starting kingdoms, not the number of races guaranteed to survive.
Maximum number of sitesMedium. Room for settlements to develop during history.
Number of beastsLow. Initial great-beast population; not a siege-frequency control.
Natural savageryLow. Distribution of savage wildlife regions; not good/evil alignment.
Real world extinct creaturesExtinct. Excludes real-world extinct species; fantasy creatures remain.
Mineral occurrenceEverywhere. Generous ore availability; still inspect your actual site.

The first-fortress reference also favors Medium size, 100 years and abundant minerals. Low savagery and Extinct are this guide’s preference for a more familiar start, not requirements for a successful empire. Keep the ordinary three cavern layers. This setup leaves the military route available; choose enemy difficulty separately below.

How to enter these settings, and when to stop

From the main menu choose Create New World. Stay in Basic options, set each row above, and check that History shows 100 years. Select Create world and let it finish. Choose Play now to save it, then Fortress. You can also save and return later. If you want to choose your own civilization and land using the next section, use the manual embark flow; the tutorial instead chooses the starting site and supplies for you. You do not need a downloaded seed or a settings file for these recipes.

Prefer a different kind of world?

Open only a style that interests you. Each recipe starts with Balanced empire above; change only the named values. The player discussions show different preferences rather than a measured “best world” ranking. The recipes below are this guide’s practical recommendations, not claims that an old shared seed still works.

Faster first fortress — learn the systems with less waiting

Change: world size Small (65 × 65), history 50 years, savagery Very Low. Keep civilizations/sites Medium, beasts Low and minerals Everywhere. Why pick it: a compact practice world for learning workshops, food, trade and a first squad. Trade-off: fewer regions to shop for and a shorter backstory; an extremely young world can have a narrower supply selection. This does not switch enemies off. Before accepting: confirm a living dwarven civilization and a suitable mainland site. If your computer still struggles in play, the local embark footprint and population are separate decisions; Small world is not a promised frame-rate fix.

Merchant network — make imports part of the strategy

Change: civilizations High, sites High and minerals Frequent; keep Medium size and 100 years. Why pick it: pursue a more crowded political world and deliberately make local resource scouting matter to your trading business. Trade-off: generation can take longer; extra civilizations are not guaranteed friendly or reachable. For a harder shortage-driven game, change Frequent to Sparse, but scarcity also affects what other civilizations can supply. Before accepting: inspect the surviving dwarven civilization, potential human contacts and land access; verify an actual supply plan for missing iron, flux or fuel. For your first successful empire I prefer Everywhere over forced shortages.

Young monster frontier — wildlife and heroic defense

Change: history 50 years, beasts High and savagery High; keep Medium size, Medium civilizations/sites and Everywhere minerals. Optional: set real-world extinct creatures to Untamed wilds if you want that additional wildlife theme. Why pick it: aim for a world with a larger initial beast roster and more wild regions. Trade-off: this is a dangerous learning environment, and neither a specific creature nor a particular attack schedule is promised. Before accepting: deliberately inspect the embark’s surroundings; High world savagery does not mean every site is savage. Pick this for monster stories, not as the necessary setting for a strong conventional military.

History and ruins — choose a place with a past

Change: history 250 years, civilizations High, sites High, beasts Medium and savagery Medium; retain Medium size and Everywhere minerals. Why pick it: spend time reading Legends and choose a fortress connected to a kingdom, war, artifact or fallen settlement. This is a story preference, not an economic upgrade. Trade-off: additional simulated centuries can remove civilizations and kill creatures as well as create events. Before accepting: use Legends before an active fortress exists, then check who actually survived. Avoid retiring or abandoning a live fortress merely to inspect Legends.

Ancient-world experiment — 500 years and uncertain survivors

Change: start from History and ruins, then set history to 500 years. Why pick it: explore a long, possibly turbulent chronology and role-play restoring an old realm. Trade-off: expect more generation work and potentially less variety among surviving factions or great beasts; “older” is not automatically “better.” A 1,000+ year custom world is an experiment, not this guide’s recommended empire start. Before accepting: reject the result for this route if there is no suitable living parent civilization or no workable trade network. Do not assume a particular age guarantees a necromancer takeover.

Magma industrial kingdom — prioritize the embark, not maximum volcanoes

Use: Balanced empire, then search for a volcano site in . Why pick it: accessible magma can support later industrial planning without a very deep supply shaft. Trade-off: attractive volcanic sites may lack convenient wood, flux, coal or water; magma does not supply the carbon ingredient needed for steel. Before accepting: check iron, flux, water, wood or an import plan, and safe space for the seven dwarves. You do not need to maximize world volcanism. Leave magma sealed until the tell you how to prepare.

Island or harsh-biome challenge — atmosphere with real logistical costs

Use: Balanced empire or History and ruins, then deliberately search for an isolated island, desert, glacier or hostile biome. These are mainly embark choices, not a single difficulty preset. Why pick it: a themed survival or self-sufficiency story after learning the ordinary route. Trade-off: isolation can undermine the trading-and-military network you wanted; sparse vegetation, harsh weather or dangerous surroundings create different supply problems. Before accepting: inspect access and resources rather than assuming every island is cut off or every mainland site is connected. I do not recommend this for your first lasting trading empire.

Optional advanced tuning

Save a custom recipe safely — do this before changing detailed controls

Open Create New World → Detailed mode. Copy the selected parameter set, rename the copy, and change that copy. Press Enter after editing a value, then Save before Create world. The saved parameter file is prefs/world_gen.txt. Keep a separate copy before importing someone else’s file. Record the game version, mods and complete parameters as well as seeds; a seed alone is not a dependable reproduction of another player’s history. None of these guide comparisons changes your game automatically.

Cavern architecture — wider chambers or more rock above them

For a planned underground capital, an optional experiment is cavern openness minimum 30 / maximum 100 and passage density minimum 0 / maximum 50. This is a community example for more open chambers, not a tested optimum. Keep three layers and leave cavern water and deep-layer switches at their ordinary defaults. Another targeted edit is Z Levels Above Layer 1: 12, the community author’s preferred building buffer. It does not turn every soil layer into 12 levels or make the guide’s excavation depth a universal coordinate. Generate and inspect before committing; broader caverns also change how you defend access. Do not remove all caverns as a beginner shortcut.

More volcano opportunities — and how to handle rejected worlds

First try the ordinary world and site finder. If a volcanic theme is the goal, copy a detailed preset, keep maximum Volcanism at 100 and adjust its high-range weighting along with a modest volcano minimum. Changing only the required minimum can produce repeated rejections. This guide does not supply an untested “perfect volcano beside iron and flux” parameter file. If generation repeatedly fails, read the rejection reason, undo the last constraint or return to the copied default. Larger required biome counts do not themselves create that terrain.

Optional extinct wildlife — understand all five choices

Extinct: none of those real-world species. Isolated: limited qualifying savage areas/islands. Untamed wilds: savage regions. Any wilderness: a broader range of wild areas. Domesticated: also permits civilization domestication. These control where creatures can occur, not a guarantee that your civilization sells a dinosaur or that a caravan carries one. Choose this for theme; it is not required for the empire build. This control was introduced in 53.15.

Accept the result, not just the recipe. Before embarking, check for a living parent civilization, workable land access, and at least one site you are willing to manage. Then follow . A larger world, older history or higher civilization slider does not replace those checks. Already playing a fortress? Treat these recipes as next-world options; you do not need to discard a functioning settlement.

Sources and limits of “best”

The recommendation is for this guide’s sustainable trade-and-army goal. Bay 12 establishes the current 53.16 release; current wiki pages describe controls but may retain older material. Community discussions illustrate preferences, not current-version benchmark results. No preset was generated or play-tested inside Dwarf Fortress during this review. World generation → embark site and starting supplies → fortress difficulty are separate choices; the guide records advice and never edits the game.

2. Start Fortress mode and inspect your parent dwarven civilization. Prefer a living civilization with several settlements for an uncomplicated migration and monarchy route. Do not assume the nearest dwarven site belongs to your selected civilization.

Enemies Off learning run

Gives more space to learn production and society. It changes the evidence: a prosperous year does not prove the fortress can handle a siege. You can revisit settings later, but build and test defenses before increasing pressure.

3. Use Normal economy and Normal enemies for this route. Enemies Off is a valid learning alternative: production and society still matter, but a peaceful year will not demonstrate siege readiness.
4. Set a starting Population Cap around 40-50 in Settings. Raise it later in controlled steps. Strict Population Cap also constrains births; caps do not evict existing dwarves, and special arrivals can exceed them.

Checkpoint Record custom settings

Hard brings pressure sooner. Disabling invader digging or building changes the defense problem. This guide assumes the ordinary 53-series capabilities remain enabled.

Checkpoint Ready

World, civilization, enemy setting and growth cap are chosen. Move on rather than rerolling indefinitely for perfect land.

Read the embark layers, not just the attractive landscape

Find a temperate site with trees, soil, reachable fresh water and a dwarven civilization that can reach it. Inspect metal and flux indicators, aquifer information and surrounding threats before committing. For the first empire, reject a heavy aquifer and hostile/reanimating surroundings unless you specifically want that engineering challenge. Pick a compact embark so travel and defense remain readable. Your initial terrain is a stronger difficulty choice than a perfect furniture layout.

SUGGESTED PLAN · Bastion Commonwealth

A site you can actually support

  • Accept ordinary terrain with a clear depot route rather than searching indefinitely for every possible ore.
  • Write down one workable substitute for each missing local resource.

Use these choices when the required level, resource or unlock is available. Opening this section does not change your character.

Compare or change your style

On Choose Fortress Location, zoom out to the regional map and open Find embark location. Run the search, close its panel to inspect the matches, then zoom into a candidate. Inspect every tile inside the proposed embark rectangle: biomes within it can have different water, aquifer and danger information. Check your origin civilization on the regional map before committing.

1. Use the site finder and inspect the entire embark rectangle. Prefer temperate woodland or similarly calm surroundings, soil, fresh water, trees, iron-bearing ore and flux. A 3x3 embark is a practical target; smaller sites also reduce simulation work.
2. Prefer no aquifer for your first empire. A light aquifer can later supply water but needs controlled sealing; a heavy aquifer is a separate engineering challenge. Avoid embark warnings about nearby necromancer towers.
3. Check neighbors and land access. An island or a mountain barrier can prevent commerce and expeditions even when local resources are excellent. Use the game access display, not apparent map distance, to judge reachability.
4. Find space for a depot and clear approach without a river crossing. Check seasonal freezing. Fresh water supports healthcare and emergencies; alcohol remains the routine drink.
FORTRESS PLANNING

Accept a manageable deficiency

Missing flux or metal can be covered by imports, with caravan dependence. Missing soil needs irrigation. Avoid combining both with hostile surroundings on a learning run.

1. Play Now provides a workable default kit. In Prepare carefully, retain two metal picks, one metal battle axe, bags, food, drink and an anvil if affordable. Drop optional luxuries before tools or supplies; prices and availability vary by civilization.

Choose how much setup you want. Play Now! accepts the default expedition; continue to and inspect what it actually supplied. Prepare for the journey carefully lets you edit skills and purchases. The roster and shopping amounts below are an optional guide example for that custom start.

2. Suggested shopping target: about 60 drinks of at least two kinds, 30 edible meat/fish, 15 and 10 pig tail seeds, about 20 logs and 20 ordinary boulders if budget allows. This is a forgiving shopping plan, not a fixed-price embark recipe. Keep tools, containers, seed and provisions ahead of optional goods.
3. Use the seven-role table below as a starting allocation. Keep woodcutting and carpentry on different dwarves so cutting a distant tree does not stop bed production. The listed skill levels are a suggested Prepare carefully allocation; inspect the points available in your embark screen before buying the final kit.

A specific seven-dwarf roster

DwarfSuggested starting skillsOpening assignment
1Mining 5; Stonecutting 5First miner; smoothing only after essential excavation.
2Mining 5; Stonecrafting 5Second miner; later makes trade crafts.
3Woodcutting 5; Axedwarf 5Cut a small safe stand of trees; later emergency defense.
4Carpentry 5; Mechanics 5Beds first; mechanisms after basic shelter.
5Stonecarving 5; Organizer, Record Keeper, Appraiser, Judge of Intent, Negotiator 1 eachRock furniture; manager, bookkeeper and broker.
6Planting 5; Herbalism 5Plant the first farm and gather safe local plants.
7Brewing 5; Cooking 5Brew first; cook only surplus ingredients after kitchen permissions.

These are roles, not a demand to micromanage every haul. Leave spare workers able to haul and construct while the specialists perform the critical jobs. Check each dwarf’s actual skills and needs; do not assign the only brewer to a permanent patrol. Extra military skill on the woodcutter is preparation, not a reason to send a lone settler into wildlife.

Checkpoint Before pressing embark

Confirm two usable picks, one battle axe, a source of wooden beds, edible supplies, drink, spawn, bags and an anvil plan. The selected settlement must have suitable terrain and a reachable route to trade. Save this preparation profile once you have balanced its real price.

4. Optional animals: a few egg-laying females and a matching male. They require nest boxes and a managed population. Grazers require grass; they are not maintenance-free rations. immediately after shelter.

Anvil dependency

The forge needs an anvil. Buying one later is viable but delays local metal equipment until one is offered. Keep your only anvil out of export or unrelated construction orders.

Checkpoint Kit checked

Two usable picks, an axe, provisions, starter seeds and a route to an anvil are accounted for. Save the profile if you want to reuse it.

Worked example assumptions

SOURCE-BASED EXAMPLE, NOT AN OBSERVED OR TESTED SAVE. Follow the 7 → 20 → 50 → 100 operating plans using the population actually present. A calm site with suitable soil, safe trees, ordinary stone and freshwater keeps the example manageable; missing ore/anvil has a trade fallback.

Treat the listed embark quantities as shopping priorities. Inspect the final price and tools in your own screen; no fixed-cost kit or perfect ore site is promised. Keep tools, bags, edible food, drink and protected spawn ahead of optional animals/luxuries.

Coverage, version notes and sources

Terrain, ore, water, neighbors, migrants, artifacts and enemies vary.

The Monarch page conflicts over City versus Metropolis; the Fortress page says City. This route prepares capacity for 140 residents without claiming 140 is a universal monarch requirement. Use the actual capital requirement display.

Fortress industry, military, diplomacy and royal progression are covered. Adventure Mode, exhaustive Legends histories, every creature/mod and advanced computing megaprojects are outside scope.

Late royal stops contain major deep-world spoilers and substantial risk. A sustainable capital and external network are a valid stopping point before opening dangerous volcanic formations.

World-generation recipes were source-reviewed for 53.16 on 11 October 2026. Community examples are historical preferences, not benchmarked current presets; no importable world_gen.txt or reproducible seed is claimed.
