Choose a survival & exploration approachSuggested plan: Quiet survivor: utility weapon, rifle and shotgun

Find a style that fits your priorities

Choose weapon roles, attachment priorities and how cautiously you approach encounters; Metro Exodus has no attribute allocation or talent-tree respec. Difficulty and New Game+ modifiers are separate decisions, and story access can temporarily replace or restrict the equipment you carry.

Reorder the comparison without changing your game settings or story preferences.

Stealth, economical precision and an emergency answer

Quiet survivor: utility weapon, rifle and shotgun

Avoid unnecessary fights, keep the story utility weapon ready, and carry a rifle plus a close-range backup when the campaign permits. The Tikhar is economical if pressure is maintained, while a shotgun covers an ambush your quiet approach did not prevent. This flexible loadout supports a first playthrough and leaves morally sensitive encounters to deliberate nonlethal choices.

Learning curveApproachable

The weapon roles are easy to understand; pressure, cleaning and deciding when not to shoot create the learning cost.

Choose this when you wantA first campaign with forgiving weapon roles · Protecting a preferred story outcome · Spending fewer resources on avoidable fights

Reconsider if: You want constant open firefights; You dislike slow observation and weapon maintenance.

How you approach each chapter

A practical rhythm, from preparation to payoff.

1
Observe first

Identify enemies, civilians and surrender opportunities before choosing an action; stay dark where practical, and use a nonlethal path when the route requires restraint.

2
Prepare the next exchange

Check utility pressure, weapon cleanliness, ammunition and healing at a safe point; reserve shotgun rounds for an ambush rather than spending them on every distant target.

Illustrative play example
An illustrative quiet approach

Imagine a lit camp lies between you and the objective. Observe the patrols, identify people who should be spared, extinguish or avoid the relevant light and move through a safe gap. If a hostile mutant forces a fight afterwards, use the appropriate weapon without exhausting the shotgun reserve. Recheck pressure and supplies before the next area. This is a tactical illustration; carrying a silent weapon alone neither guarantees stealth nor determines the ending.

FROM A REALISTIC START TO THE PAYOFF

Your progression path

Read in order. Each stage explains what makes the next step practical.

1Opening
Learn darkness and weapon roles

Use the weapons the story actually gives you, and practice avoiding unnecessary detection before seeking a perfect attachment set. Clean at the available bench, collect useful supplies and learn the difference between a hostile threat and a person the route asks you to spare.

2First payoff
Utility precision with a close-range backup

When Tikhar arrives, practice pumping and reading pressure before a quiet engagement. Retain a dependable conventional gun and shotgun where slots permit. Prioritize an attachment that improves your real aiming problem rather than assuming maximum scope magnification is always useful.

3Mature
Adapt to chapter equipment and hazards

Review the kit when the story changes your utility weapon or inventory. Carry filters and healing for the next environment, return to known benches when practical and preserve resources for compulsory fights. Keep protected factions and surrendered enemies out of lethal weapon objectives.

Strengths, tradeoffs & requirements

Strengths
  • Quiet progress conserves conventional ammunition
  • Separate emergency weapon prevents overreliance on a slow precision tool
  • Compatible with exploration and restrained moral choices
Tradeoffs
  • Silent attacks still kill and can harm the story route
  • Pressure and dirt can undermine an otherwise good shot
  • Avoiding fights cannot remove every mandatory encounter
Plan around these requirements
  • Utility-weapon story access
  • A serviceable rifle and shotgun when available
  • Workbenches, cleaning resources and filters
  • Healing supplies, charged light and nonlethal opportunities

Preparation kit

The supporting roles that make this style work.

Tikhar or current story utility weapon

Quiet precision with the correct pressure or ammunition routine.

Rifle

A dependable conventional answer for sustained mandatory pressure.

Shotgun

Close-range emergency response when stealth or distance collapses.

Filters, medical supplies and charged light

Support hazards that weapon damage cannot solve.

CARRIED INTO YOUR WALKTHROUGH

What to prioritize

  1. Prioritize useful gear and benches without requiring every optional fight
  2. Put moral restraint before kill-count farming
  3. Teach utility maintenance at its real story access

Can you change your mind? Swap weapons and attachments at available opportunities; no character respec is required. Supplies and discovered attachments are the cost. Some chapters dictate access, and irreversible moral actions cannot be corrected merely by changing the gun afterwards.

Established archetype

Economical stealth is supported by multiple guides. Individual stealth encounters and platform bugs were not playtested.

Version context: PC Exodus: official account update 26 August 2026; Enhanced Edition DLSS fix 2 September. No numbered gameplay rebalance was established in those notes. Ranger Hardcore and NG+ Iron Mode remain separate settings with different save restrictions; neither edition was gameplay-tested in this review.

Research and recommendation basis · 7 references

Balanced stealth, distance shooting and mandatory-fight loadouts solve different situations. The challenge option is a preparation overlay, not higher weapon damage. Recommendations prioritize ammo economy, upkeep and ending-compatible choices over unsupported best-DPS claims.

Chapter loadout and survival plan

Choose quiet survival, scoped fire, controlled close combat or a learned Ranger Hardcore route. The plan changes weapon roles and preparation; regional moral decisions and one-way collectible checkpoints still apply to every loadout.

Progression plan

Quiet survivor — recommended

A forgiving loadout for a careful first run and a sound foundation for Ranger Hardcore: quiet precision, a shotgun for emergencies, and efficient supplies.

Start with this setup
  • Keep pressure maintained; use it on appropriate hostiles rather than protected people.
  • Carry a reliable rifle and an Ashot/Shambler; do not use stealth weapons as permission to kill civilians.
  • Favor filter duration, a charged light, clean weapons and medical reserves. There are no skill points to assign.
Preview this plan from the beginning to the endgame · 10 stages
    • Practise separate knockout/kill prompts.
    • Keep the close-range gun loaded before crossing a blind doorway.
    • Get Tokarev's .
    • Take the , then and ammo pouches.
    • Use the first Volga circuit to collect the plane's and scope, then the prisoner camp's ammunition upgrade and key. The key supports the terminal goggles detour during the railcar mission. Keep an unsuppressed rifle configuration for open fights rather than treating the suppressor as a universal upgrade. Add optional weapon detours when they fit your current crossing; completing every map marker is not an opening requirement.
    • Collect night vision and keep its charge topped up.
    • Use fire against dangerous mutants; keep people alive on the moral route.
    • Try the Bulldog if its condition and attachments are better.
    • Use the brighter light in the bunker and recharge often.
    • Take and consumable capacity.
    • Carry a loaded shotgun for flankers while the rifle handles distance.
    • Start with the .
    • Prioritize stealth and crafting reserves over rebuilding every old attachment.
    • Save filters and healing for the institute.
    • Avoid killing Blind Ones for Guide.
    • Sammy for active engagements; suppressed Stallion when available.
    • Strip all parts for Lord of War even when they do not fit this plan.
    • Review both nine-part weapon lists at a bench.
    • Keep the preferred configuration equipped after collecting unwanted parts.
    • Confirm the final lore pickup before the Captain rendezvous.
    • Keep the current health and ammunition check visible until the Batwing encounter ends.

Your completion route: Finish the chosen base-game ending, The Two Colonels and Sam's Story; use planned replays for the opposite ending, New Game+/Iron challenges and remaining achievements. Diary and postcard waypoints appear in the walkthrough, with illustrated atlases linked for visual reference.

Changing your plan keeps your saved achievements, quest choices and checklists. Required respecs, unlocks and later equipment are explained at their route steps.

Kaleidoscope

Make three kills while wearing the gas mask, using night vision and aiming through a sniper scope together.

Brakeman

Detach all required cars on the hostile Moscow train before planting the bomb.

Dodge master

Avoid every Blind One throwing attack in the Two Colonels final encounter; a thrown mutant also counts.

Stand back

Kill 50 enemies at long distance; use a scoped weapon against distant hostile targets.

Untouchable

Finish Sam's Story on Normal or higher without dying in any Batwing encounter. Prepare for all three fights, not just the last.

A Man of Principle

Complete Sam's Story with the Captain's full trust. Follow every local trust interaction; the guide uses detonation as the conservative final branch.

Carmaheddon

Kill 50 enemies by running them down with the Bukhanka. Use hostile mutants to avoid harming the slave-rescue route.

Hardcore

Finish the full main campaign on Ranger Hardcore. Select it at the start and do not lower difficulty.

Collect all nine Two Colonels diary pages, including the last one before the final vent.

Mind you, it's quite heavy!

Librarian

Collect the full 71-page base diary set despite the achievement wording saying 70. Use the chapter atlas and replay for missed pages.

IN CAMPAIGN ORDER

Artyom and the crew: preferred campaign endingCompare choices, rewards & consequences · spoilers
Artyom survives; protect all three companions

Anna and Artyom survive; Artyom leads the Order. Keep Duke, Damir and healthy Alyosha for all three companion achievements plus Full Strength and Your Destination. Miller still dies.

Artyom survives with one companion loss

Two favorable regional outcomes can support the good ending, but Full Strength is lost. Select which personal story you want to change and verify the other two.

Artyom dies saving Anna

Arrange at least two unfavorable regional outcomes. Anna survives but Artyom dies, awarding Eternal Voyage; Your Destination and Full Strength require another campaign branch.

Progression at a glance

Carry all three crew outcomes forward

Full Strength needs the same continuing campaign to preserve Duke, Damir and healthy Alyosha.

  1. 1

    Choose the crew-survival campaign

    Keep the regional saves

A last-minute final dialogue does not repair an earlier regional loss.

  2. 2

    Preserve each regional result

    Duke: Volga

Spare the church followers and merchants; confirm Duke boards alive.

    Damir: Caspian

Free both slave ships, return Giul's photo and protect slaves; confirm he returns to the Aurora.

    Alyosha: Taiga

Keep Pioneers and Pirates alive; confirm the peaceful departure and no serious injury.

  3. 3

    Continue the successful campaign

    Record the actual scenes

Separate replayed chapters do not replace the campaign whose outcomes you are carrying.

Guide diagram. Original outcome checklist. Damir staying with Giul is departure, not death; each regional result must be checked in-game.

Choose your difficulty and start Moscow. If Hardcore is your target, begin on Ranger Hardcore and keep it through the campaign; ordinary Hardcore is a different preset. Otherwise choose the challenge you enjoy.

On Ranger Hardcore, plan around automatic checkpoints; the ordinary manual/quick-save recovery used elsewhere in this guide is unavailable. Iron Mode has the stricter chapter-level reset rule described at . When this guide says to preserve an alternate save, read that as conditional on the mode’s actual saving options. For incompatible story outcomes, a separate campaign is the dependable fallback.

Play the opening tunnels next. Equipment maintenance starts when its tools are available. Crew and ending choices can stay undecided; the guide explains their consequences before the relevant actions.

This route applies to original Metro Exodus (Steam 412020) and PC Enhanced Edition (1449560). Both currently list 68 achievements with matching names; their Steam records are separate. Enhanced is a separate installation, and its DLC entitlement depends on owning the expansions. Check the library entry you actually launch.

IN CAMPAIGN ORDER

Moscow: tunnels, hospital and the surface

Collectibles at this stop · 0/8 recorded

Check an item after picking it up and confirming it in the game. These marks are separate from platform achievements. Follow the local chapter’s last safe pickup and replay rules.

1. Follow the tunnel, collect ammunition from the skeleton and deal with the first mutant before crossing the damaged blue carriage. At the exit, use the door promptly; the attacking pack is a scripted escape, not an arena you need to empty. Complete the interaction prompts, then explore the hospital before joining the others.
Help leaving the first tunnel encounter

Where to look: Begin in the tunnel and inspect the skeleton for ammunition before the first mutant. The damaged blue carriage leads toward the exit afterward.

What to do: Handle the first encounter, move through the carriage and use the exit door promptly when the pack arrives. Complete its prompts, then inspect the hospital before joining the group.

What should happen: You pass the first encounter and the door interaction advances the escape. You still have an opportunity to inspect the hospital before its departure scene.

If it does not work: If enemies keep arriving at the exit, focus on the door prompt rather than trying to clear the whole pack. If you are unsure about a paper pickup, inspect the nearby desks before crossing the next story transition.

Sources for this explanation
2. On the trip with Anna, replace the filter when instructed. Follow her through the building, hold a firing lane against the attacking mutants, and take cover when the large surface pack passes. Spending your ammunition on that passing pack provides no useful route advantage.
3. After capture, take the medkit on the escape route, crawl beneath the obstruction and enter the maintenance passage. Do not rush through every doorway: Moscow has ten diary pages and two postcards, and several rooms become inaccessible behind story transitions.

Checkpoint Moscow collectibles

Open the before the train escape. The illustrated chapter atlas is linked there. Search hospital bedside tables, the apartment rooms, the captured-train work areas and the last hostile train as you pass.

PLAY & BUILD COACHING

Early combat

Keep cover between you and the second attacker. Reload while Anna or a doorway limits incoming angles. Use a close-range weapon on rushing mutants and save automatic ammunition for enemies that cannot safely be bypassed.

gear

First papers

After the opening mutant, check the candlelit desk on the right for Half-Torn Notebook. In the hospital, collect Patient File from the desk ahead-right, then the postcard on the green locker before the green meeting-room door.

gear

Anna's surface route

After one staircase, enter the doorway left of the second stairs: postcard by the window, Dusty Diary in the adjoining left room. After the Watchmen fight, take Shopping List from the corpse against the left door. Shura's Note is inside the blue bus on the right; Crumpled Letter is by the corpse after the crawl under logs.

Moscow: rescue Anna and steal the locomotive

Collectibles at this stop · 0/2 recorded

Check an item after picking it up and confirming it in the game. These marks are separate from platform achievements. Follow the local chapter’s last safe pickup and replay rules.

SUGGESTED PLAN · Quiet survivor — recommended

Learn nonlethal movement

  • Practise separate knockout/kill prompts.
  • Keep the close-range gun loaded before crossing a blind doorway.

Use these choices when the required level, resource or unlock is available. Opening this section does not change your character.

Compare or change your style
1. Join Yermak, cut the power at the panel, and stay low on the ladder approach. Knock out the isolated guard, use a thrown can to turn the next guard away, and reach Anna. After the radio revelation, the objective becomes the locomotive.
2. Keep the flashlight off around human patrols. Advance from cover to cover while they look away; if the route turns into a firefight, withdraw behind solid cover and deal with one firing lane at a time. This is a good place to practise nonlethal timing for Volga, where it matters to Duke.
Help crossing the guarded maintenance route

Where to look: Follow Yermak to the power panel and inspect the ladder approach. Watch the isolated guard and the next patrol’s facing direction.

What to do: Cut the power, stay low, and use cover and the thrown-can distraction to cross the exposed route. Keep your flashlight off near the human patrols.

What should happen: You reach the next objective through the yard without remaining exposed to several firing angles at once.

If it does not work: If detected, retreat behind solid cover and address one firing lane before moving again. A noisy mistake is a reason to stabilize your position, not sprint through every doorway.

Sources for this explanation
3. Inspect every dropped gun before leaving it. Remove useful attachments instead of replacing a better weapon merely because the new one has a sight. In later workbench menus, compare damage, stability and capacity together: an impressive barrel is less valuable if you cannot land the follow-up shot.
gear

Base papers

After rescuing Anna, take Official Note from the console involved in the struggle. Later, pass through the red door out of the stealth yard and inspect the desk on the left for Memo.

When you reach a surrender or stealth encounter

4. Learn the separate knockout and kill prompts before touching a surrendered enemy. Ordinary combat and the moral route are different checks: a quiet knife kill is still a kill. Your watch light and enemy dialogue help you assess exposure; crouch, break sight lines and observe patrols before moving.

Martian

Use the repair prompt to patch a cracked gas mask; repair it rather than only changing its filter.

Saboteur

Perform 50 melee kills or knockouts. Knockouts let this coexist with the merciful route, except the stricter Forest child attempt.

Moscow: detach the cars before planting the bomb

Collectibles at this stop · 0/2 recorded

Check an item after picking it up and confirming it in the game. These marks are separate from platform achievements. Follow the local chapter’s last safe pickup and replay rules.

1. Once aboard the pursuing train, use its right-hand outside route to bypass the first group, subdue the exposed guard and enter through the window. Move toward the engine through the cars; side cover and the underfloor passage provide alternatives to firing down every aisle.
2. Before each eligible coupling is left behind, interact with it to detach the cars. Brakeman needs every required carriage detached during this sequence. Simply blowing up the locomotive at the end does not satisfy the separate condition.
3. Search the last rooms before planting the explosive. Then plant it and jump back as directed. Do not stay to loot during the final escape animation sequence.

Checkpoint Leave Moscow with 10 diaries and 2 postcards

Compare your diary menu with the Moscow picture atlas. Missing paper collectibles can be recovered with chapter replay; a later chapter cannot bring you back here in the same journey.

gear

Last two Moscow diaries

After the window takedown, enter the car on your left: Official Letter is on its left desk. Beyond the mounted-machine-gun car, take Crumpled Note from the crate on your right before planting the explosive. Some older guides spell it Crumbled Note.

Coverage, version notes and sources

Includes all 68 PC achievements, the important weapon and suit routes, companion outcomes, and named waypoint directions for all 71 base-game diary pages and 21 postcards. Linked illustrated atlases help identify exact rooms. This is researched text coverage, not an independently played completion test.

DLC routes include all 9 Two Colonels diaries, 11 Sam lore diaries, the stash and melody milestones, and the named 18-part Sammy/Stallion inventory. Optional ambient conversations and every loose crafting resource are not enumerated.

Recommendations are researched strategies, not a guarantee of surviving Ranger Hardcore. Save and reload behavior differs by difficulty; no obsolete version downgrade or achievement unlock exploit is required.
