Block, parry and hit back

Shield and one-handed weapon

A shield, a one-handed weapon and the best armour of each biome. Blocking and parrying make mistakes survivable, and a bow handles flying enemies.

What you actually do

A practical rhythm, from preparation to payoff.

1
Prepare

Rested, three foods, repaired gear and the right resistance mead before every boss.

2
Fight

Learn one attack at a time from the boss section; retreat to the portal and come back rather than trading hits at low health.

Illustrative play example
Illustrative fight

Illustrative: Bonemass leans back for his poison cloud. You stop attacking, sprint out, drink a healing mead, and step back in after the cloud fades. This is a preparation routine, not a tested speedrun.

Your progression path

Read in order. Each stage explains what makes the next step practical.

1Opening
Meadows and Black Forest

2First payoff
Swamp to Plains

Iron mace for the Swamp, silver sword and shield in the Mountains.

3Mature
Mistlands to Deep North

Mistwalker, Flametal and Nord weapons with heavy armour.

Progression plan

Shield and one-handed weapon — forgiving first run

A shield, a one-handed weapon and the best armour of each biome. Blocking and parrying make mistakes survivable, and a bow handles flying enemies.

Start with this setup
  • No class to pick: skills rise by using a weapon. Carry a Club or Flint spear and a Wood shield from the first day.
  • Keep a Crude bow for deer, and anything flying. Practise the parry: block just as the hit lands to stagger the attacker.
  • This is a source-based recommendation, not a tested speedrun or a guaranteed Hard-mode clear.
Preview this plan from the beginning to the endgame · 7 stages
    • Make the Bronze pickaxe first, then a Bronze mace (skeletons) or sword, and upgrade the buckler for 's stomp.
    • Iron mace or sledge for blunt damage against and skeletons; banded shield.
    • Silver sword for spirit damage; silver shield blocks most of 's bites.
    • sword, Black metal shield, Padded armour.
    • Mistwalker sword and Carapace armour; Demolisher for groups.
    • A socketed Flametal sword or mace with Ask armour.
    • Nord one-hander and Protector armour; Thunderblood weapons when the essence drops.

Your completion route: Defeat all eight bosses from to , offer the Sacrificial blood at the Stones, then finish the 53-achievement checklist.

Changing your plan keeps your saved achievements, quest choices and checklists. Required respecs, unlocks and later equipment are explained at their route steps.

Research baseline checked 13 October 2026: Valheim 1.0 launched on 9 September 2026 and the latest patch is 1.0.17 (6 October 2026), a save fix. The game is out of Early Access; the Deep North and are released content.

The Deep North only appears in land nobody has explored. Iron Gate recommends a new world for 1.0, and this guide assumes one.

Default recommendation: a Normal world. Easier world modifiers are explained at the start and in every boss section. The Toughest Viking, Master Hunter and Child of Odin achievements need Hard combat.

Achievements only count from 1.0 on, and most console commands mark the world and character so they stop earning them.

Worlds are procedural. Directions use biomes, Vegvisirs, landmarks and map icons, not coordinates.

Saving
The game saves your world and character automatically every few minutes and when you quit through the menu. Quit with Esc › Logout rather than closing the window.
If you fail or die
On Normal you drop everything you carry into a tombstone where you died and lose a little of each skill. You come back at your bed (or the Sacrificial Stones), eat, and walk back to open the tombstone. A Casual death setting keeps your items.
Difficulty
Pick the Normal world modifier preset for the game as designed, or Casual/Easy if fights stress you out. You can also keep Normal and only lower Combat. Decide at world creation: changing it later needs a console command, which stops achievements.

SUGGESTED ORDER

Make a world and land on the Sacrificial Stones

Begin here: The main menu, before you have a character or a world.

Make your Viking

Goal · main menu to your first minute in the Meadows · nothing to fight yet

1. On the main menu choose Start Game. On the character screen pick New, choose a body, hair and beard (in 1.0 every style is open from the start), type a name and press Start. Your character is separate from your world: the same Viking can later visit other worlds.

2. On the world screen press New world. Type a name and leave the seed as it is unless a friend gave you one. Valheim 1.0 places the Deep North only in land nobody has explored yet, so start a fresh world rather than reusing an old Early Access one.

3. Press World modifiers before you confirm. Normal is the game as designed and is what this guide assumes. If fights stress you out, pick the Casual or Easy preset, or keep Normal and set only Combat to Easy or Very easy. Hard, Hardcore (permanent death), Immersive (no map) and Hammer (free building) are for later runs.

4. Confirm with Start. A raven carries you to the Sacrificial Stones, a ring of tall standing stones in a meadow. That is the start of the 1.0 achievement I Have Arrived!.

5. Learn the controls you use every minute (default keyboard and mouse): W A S D to move, Shift to run, Space to jump, Left mouse to attack, Right mouse to block, Middle mouse for the weapon's special attack, Space while blocking to roll, E to pick up and use, Tab for inventory and crafting, M for the map, 1–8 for the hotbar. Hold the Hammer and right-click to open its building menu.

What the death setting changes

On Normal you drop everything you carry into a tombstone where you died and lose a small part of your skill levels; you respawn at your bed or the Stones and walk back to collect it. Casual keeps your items and skills. Hardcore deletes the character. If the corpse runs are what you dislike, change only the death penalty, not the whole preset.

Next: Talk to Hugin at the Stones, then gather wood and stone for your first tools (next section).

Build, gear and combat tips for this part
PLAY & BUILD COACHING

Pick settings you will enjoy, then leave them alone

Modifiers are chosen when the world is made. Changing them afterwards needs the console command `setworldmodifier`, and Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says most console commands mark the world and character so they no longer earn achievements. If you care about achievements, decide now. The Toughest Viking and Master Hunter awards need Hard combat; everything else works on Normal or easier.

SUGGESTED ORDER

First tools, a workbench and a warm shelter

Survive the first evening

Goal · within sight of the Sacrificial Stones · bare hands

1. Hugin, the big black raven at the Stones, has a short tip for most new things you meet. Walk up and press E to read it; he returns whenever you find something new. The tall stones themselves have hooks for each boss trophy you earn later.

2. Pick up loose Stones and Branches (dead sticks on the ground) and the Flint on beaches and river banks. Open Tab and craft a Hammer, a Club and a Stone Axe. Chop a small tree (big ones break into logs you then chop again). Step away when a trunk falls: a falling tree is the most common first death.

3. Hold the Hammer, right-click, and place a (10 Wood) in a flat spot near the Stones. It only works under a roof, so add a few Wood walls and a roof over it; the small radius around it lets you build.

Help placing a workbench that works

Where to look: Look at the after placing it: if it says it needs a roof, it is not covered. Check that the roof pieces actually sit above it, not beside it.

What to do: Place wood walls on at least three sides and roof pieces directly over the bench, then interact with it again. Keep the campfire under a roof with a gap for smoke.

What should happen: The crafting menu opens at the bench and the build radius around it lets you place more pieces with the Hammer.

If it does not work: If smoke builds up and you start choking, open a hole in the roof or move the fire. If the bench is still blocked, place it under a fully closed roof section and try again.

Sources for this explanation

4. Inside the same shelter place a Campfire (stone ring and wood) and a Bed. Leave a gap or a high hole in the roof so smoke escapes, or it suffocates you. Interact with the bed to set your spawn point, then sleep through the first night.

5. Sit or stand by the fire under the roof until the Rested icon appears. Rested speeds up stamina regeneration and skill gains; more Comfort (better furniture and decorations near the fire) makes it last longer. Leave every base trip Rested.

Optional · nearby

Small home upgrades

Comfort · your first house · any time

1. Comfort counts the best piece of each furniture type in range: a better bed, a chair or bench, a table, a rug and a banner each add to it. A level 20 Comfort score unlocks Comfort is King in 1.0. You get there late game, so just keep upgrading.

Next: Hunt deer and boar for leather and food, then make a bow (next section).

SUGGESTED ORDER

Leather, a bow and three foods

Hunt and eat well

Goal · the Meadows around the Stones · Club and Stone Axe

1. Boar are small, brown and only fight back when hit; finish them with the Club. Deer run, so crouch (Ctrl) and approach from behind, or wait for the bow. Pick up Raw meat, Leather scraps and Deer hide. Cook meat on a Cooking station over the campfire and take it off when it is done, before it burns.

2. At the make a Crude bow (10 Wood, 8 Leather scraps) and a stack of Wood arrows. Arrows can be recovered from where they land. Then make Leather armour (helmet, tunic, trousers) as hides come in.

3. Eat up to three different foods at once (Right mouse on a food in your hotbar, or double-click it in the bag). Each one raises your maximum health or stamina until it wears off; the same food twice does nothing. Mix Cooked meat, Raspberries and Mushrooms, and add Honey when you find a beehive. Full food matters more than armour early on.

Optional · nearby

Bees in the abandoned houses

Hidden items · ruined wooden houses in the Meadows · any time

1. Easy to miss: abandoned Meadows houses sometimes have a Beehive on the wall. Break it to get a Queen bee (and a few stings), then build your own Beehive at home with it. It slowly fills with honey you can collect.
Optional · nearby

Tame a boar

Optional pet · the Meadows · any time

1. Fence in a wild boar (it must not see you attack it), drop mushrooms, berries or carrots near it and stay out of sight. Hearts appear as it tames. Two tame boars breed piglets for a steady meat supply.

Next: Find two deer trophies and 's altar (next section).

Build, gear and combat tips for this part
PLAY & BUILD COACHING

If you die

Nothing is lost for good on Normal. Your items wait in a tombstone at the place you died, and it shows on the map. Grab a spare weapon, eat, and walk back in daylight. Opening the tombstone puts everything back into your bag.

SUGGESTED ORDER

Eikthyr: the lightning stag

Prepare for Eikthyr

Goal · his altar in the Meadows · leather armour, bow, three foods

1. At the Sacrificial Stones walk up to the glowing Vegvisir stone (a runestone with a red glow) and press E. It marks 's altar on your map with a boss icon.

2. Collect 2 Deer trophies. Deer drop them now and then; keep hunting until you have two.

3. Bring a Wood shield if you have one, the Crude bow with at least 50 arrows (fire arrows add burning), a Club or Flint spear, and three foods eaten just before. Be Rested.

Defeat Eikthyr

Boss · his altar · about 500 health

1. Place the trophies on the altar (E on the altar, with trophies in your bag) and step back. has about 500 health and no resistances, so any weapon works.

2. Charge: he lowers his antlers and rushes. Block with your shield or sidestep; the big rocks around the altar stop him, so circle them. Lightning bolt: sidestep. Close burst: when he rears up beside you, back off. Shoot from a distance, then switch to the club when he is close and recovering.

3. Pick up 's trophy and (3 per kill). Take the trophy to his hook at the Sacrificial Stones and press E to set his Forsaken power: press F in the field for less stamina used when running and jumping.

If you keep dying

Fight from behind one of the rocks so his charge stops. Use the bow and step out only to shoot. Eat three foods and arrive Rested; a full stomach roughly doubles your health at this stage. In a friend's world the fight is identical, but split up so he chases one of you while the other shoots.

Make this fight easier

Changing world modifiers after creation needs a console command, which flags the world for achievements. If you are not playing for achievements, set Combat to Easy or Very easy before you start a new world. Otherwise the cheapest help is three foods, Rested, and 100 arrows.

Next: Craft an Antler pickaxe at the and head into the Black Forest (next chapter).
