Platform-specific rule

Mods and achievements

CD Projekt RED explicitly disables achievements on modded console saves. That statement does not establish a blanket PC restriction or guarantee recovery after removing mods.

Choose your witcher buildSuggested plan: Wolven sword-and-Sign hybrid

Find a style that fits your priorities

Choose the combat rhythm you want to learn. Each path begins with attainable equipment and grows into its named school; story outcomes and Gwent remain independent choices.

Reorder the comparison without changing your game settings or story preferences.

Adaptable monster hunter

Wolven sword-and-Sign hybrid

Use a Sign to make an opening, take a short sword exchange, then move before the enemy recovers. This is the comfortable middle ground for someone who wants to use Geralt’s whole toolkit. Your opening works in ordinary equipment; the named school set and mutation are later destinations.

Learning curveModerate

You change Signs with the opponent while keeping sword exchanges short.

Choose this when you wantLearning different monster counters · One flexible completionist campaign · Swords with useful magic

Reconsider if: You want a single repeated damage button; You want maximum specialization immediately.

What you actually do

A practical rhythm, from preparation to payoff.

1
Prepare

Read the bestiary entry, choose the appropriate oil and cast Quen before committing. Keep enough stamina to recover when the first shield breaks.

2
Create an opening

Use Yrden for a spectral target, or an effective control Sign for the current opponent. The purpose is a safe exchange, not casting every Sign automatically.

3
Strike and reset

Land a few sword hits while the opening lasts. With Resonance later equipped, connect the cast to its empowered follow-up; retreat instead of forcing the entire sequence.

Illustrative play example
Example: a wraith contract

Before entering the haunted area, prepare the spectral counter and check your silver sword. Cast Quen, place Yrden where you can actually fight, then take a short attack window while the wraith is vulnerable. If it leaves the circle, move and re-establish the opening. This illustrative routine stays useful long before the late hybrid package is complete.

FROM A REALISTIC START TO THE PAYOFF

Your progression path

Read in order. Each stage explains what makes the next step practical.

1Opening
Quen + short sword exchanges

In White Orchard, use the existing Viper-diagram sweep and Places of Power. Start with a serviceable weapon pair and a few useful active skills instead of waiting for a complete school outfit.

2First payoff
A coherent medium-armor toolkit

In Velen, choose affordable armor and an optional Griffin bridge. Buy the skills used in your actual fights, and reserve money for repairs and the walkthrough’s time-sensitive purchases.

3Mature
Wolven equipment + casting follow-up

When Kaer Morhen becomes reachable, follow the ordinary Wolven hunt. Develop the connected Sign route toward Resonance while keeping the Combat side of your routine effective.

4Optional ceiling
Conductors of Magic

Research the Blood and Wine mutation chain when available. Use an eligible drawn sword and compare the full equipped set bonus before replacing school weapons with collected relics.

Guide progression diagram — an authored explanation, not an official skill tree or measured ranking.

Strengths, tradeoffs & requirements

Strengths
  • Has a practical answer to many enemy types
  • Works before the named equipment appears
  • Leaves room for dialogue and collection priorities
Tradeoffs
  • Split skill investment delays some specialist payoffs
  • You must remember which Sign helps this monster
  • Mutation research competes with ordinary skills for points
Plan around these requirements
  • A maintained steel and silver sword
  • Medium armor; ordinary Wolven gear needs later Kaer Morhen access
  • Blood and Wine for the optional Conductors mutation

Preparation kit

The supporting roles that make this style work.

Quen

Creates room for a mistaken read; it does not remove the need to dodge.

Bestiary and oils

Keep the correct monster counter in the routine.

Tawny Owl / Thunderbolt

Choose stamina support or sword pressure when the encounter justifies the potion cost.

CARRIED INTO YOUR WALKTHROUGH

What to prioritize

  1. Keep early monster-specific preparation visible before each contract.
  2. Route the optional Griffin bridge and later Wolven hunt at attainable levels.
  3. Reserve story and Gwent purchases before optional enchanting.

Can you change your mind? Ordinary skills can be reassigned with a Potion of Clearance. Replacing a whole armor school costs materials and crowns; mutation research has its own costs, so transition in stages.

Checked 2026-10-10: Remastered 5.01.

Eight paths use the Remastered connected skill tree. Ursine now gives a concrete defensive mutation choice; Metamorphosis has a usable critical-effect routine without unsupported unlimited-effect claims.

This is a source review of build dependencies, not an in-game playthrough or damage benchmark. It does not certify every quest, achievement trigger, random drop or installed mod.

Reviewed plans and corrections
  • Wolven path — balanced swords and Signs · Retained. Uses current Wolf School/Sign-sword hybrid rules, not a stale set bonus or old row-spend tree.
  • Feline duelist — fast attacks, dodges and Whirl · Retained. Current connected fast-attack route is already present.
  • Advanced hybrid — Griffin Conductors Sign-sword controller · Retained. Current Sign path and Conductors option remain supported.
  • Advanced hybrid — Manticore Euphoria sword-alchemy · Retained. Current alchemy and optional Euphoria route remains viable without extreme-toxicity assumptions.
  • Advanced — Sword and alchemy into Manticore Euphoria · Retained. Euphoria engine is current; guide avoids copying old prerequisite placement.
  • Advanced — Griffin Signs into Conductors spellblade · Retained. Current Conductors plus qualifying drawn sword is supported.
  • Ursine defensive swordsman · Updated. Viable defensive archetype; name a concrete Bear School and Mutated Skin default instead of an unspecified mutation choice.
  • Metamorphosis bruiser · Updated. Current mutation is supported, not broken. Replace experimental-only final step with an actual critical-effect/decoction routine and correct crafted-versus-researched wording.
Outdated or unsupported advice excluded
  • Legacy 4.x point-row allocations are not the Remastered skill tree.
  • Only one mutation is active; no unlimited triggered-decoction or horse-prebuff requirement is assumed.

Wild Hunt, both expansions, quest choices, Gwent advice, achievements, equipment, build progression and repeated coaching were screened against current and historical references.

Source-based audit with documented gaps. Section screening is not individual fact verification, and no complete current-version playthrough is claimed.

Corrections in this review · may contain spoilers
  • Explicit patch-4.0 note supersedes older GameBanshee wording. Preserve all Hughes outcomes. Reference
  • Five coaching copies retain obsolete money and unqualified refusal XP. Main choice 18 already uses the corrected and qualified wording. Reference
  • Cant Touch This prohibits Quen specifically, not other Signs. Official wording and explicit Igni example support separate restrictions. Reference
  • Source documents historical behavior and a later-spawn bug. Align directory wording with already-qualified route prose; preserve the seven-year warning. Reference
  • Legacy guide includes Anseis as fifth competition. Exact current achievement requirement not resolved. Reference
  • Only historical comments support this recovery, with old area-boundary bug reports. No safe 5.01 replay established. Reference
Remaining verification
  • Tournament sub-event eligibility, late Vivienne behavior and postgame Hen Gaidth access are qualified at their relevant steps.
  • Many smaller directions, random rewards and legacy quest flags still lack a complete current-version source match or gameplay reproduction.

Authored coaching synthesized from this guide's existing route, builds and source bibliography. This date records the data/anchor review, not fresh verification of every linked page or hands-on gameplay. Facts are entered manually; recommendations do not read the game save, certify achievement unlocks, or cover every possible state. Existing coverage limits: This is a researched PC guide, not a personally tested playthrough. Confirm actual achievement unlocks in your launcher and use the named checkpoints before irreversible choices. Official 5.0/5.01 notes confirm version-level changes, but do not publish a complete current skill graph. Named paths were cross-checked against current community game-data references; exact percentages and strict point-by-level budgets are deliberately omitted. The 5.01 Exploding Shield change is newer than some 5.0 skill transcription pages. The installed 5.01 tooltip and actual prerequisite connections remain the final check for a player's allocation. Quest outcomes and item locations are chiefly longstanding campaign references, not a claim that every branch has been replayed under 5.01. Inaccessible pages were not used as evidence for new corrections. The existing guide is extensive, but neither it nor this review claims to catalogue every ambient conversation, random chest, variable-stat item or possible mod combination. The build choices cover balanced, combat, Signs and alchemy playstyles. They are alternatives over the same existing route; New Game Plus scaling, modded balance and the future Songs of the Past campaign are outside scope. Structured choice outcomes retain the original directory's full comparison and safeguard paragraphs for each option. These shared paragraphs can mention other alternatives; the first sentence and route anchor identify the selected option. No original consequence was shortened by the extraction. Legacy gear-location references are used for acquisition, not as proof of unchanged 5.x numerical bonuses. Current equipped-skill/connected-prerequisite rules were checked separately. No controlled damage testing or completed Death March playthrough is claimed. The twelve-slot examples are late priority layouts with connector and mutation research costs in addition. Extra mutation slots unlock only through research and must match the active mutation's accepted colors; they are not assumed at the moment the interface unlocks. Songs of the Past remains outside scope. The retained bomb-heavy Manticore route and other existing builds remain available; these two are deeper late-game choices rather than forced replacements of player preferences.

Coaching review: 2026-10-09 · Synthesis of cited guide sources. Guide checks do not claim a personal completion playthrough.

  • Actual outcomes are separate from intended outcomes.
  • Named profiles preserve separate campaigns.
  • Stable task checkpoints preserve existing completion records.

YOUR PLAN · EQUIPMENT · ACHIEVEMENTS

Choose your character build

Choose a combat progression for the full campaign: spend early skill points, equip the skills that fit, improve swords/armor and alchemy with the local quests, then unlock the selected mutation in Blood and Wine. Story choices, Gwent and restricted achievements stay alongside their local instructions.

Progression plan

Wolven path — balanced swords and Signs

A forgiving general-purpose route for a first completionist run: use Quen and short dodges to create safe sword openings, then develop the new Sign-to-sword links. Medium armor supports the flexible style, and ordinary becomes a later destination.

Start with this setup
  • Priority: reliable damage and survival first, specialized damage later. Take prerequisite ranks as needed rather than spending every early point on one fully ranked skill.
  • Use medium armor with Wolf School Techniques once the equipment supports it. Group active Combat skills with a red mutagen and Signs skills with a blue one when the relevant slots are available.
  • The ordinary equipment route is , useful medium armor, Griffin as an optional Velen bridge, then after Kaer Morhen access. Do not confuse ordinary Wolven and Forgotten Wolven diagrams.
  • Carry Swallow, Thunderbolt and Tawny Owl as available. Alchemy remains useful without investing in a full Alchemy tree. Make a separate plain-sword setup for Even Odds.
Preview this plan from the beginning to the endgame · 7 stages
    • Spend the first points on Muscle Memory, Exploding Shield and then Active Shield through its Quen prerequisite. Add Delusion when you want more Axii conversation options.
    • Collect both Viper sword diagrams during the existing sweep. Craft at the garrison blacksmith when affordable; retain the original Kaer Morhen armor for its upgrade path.
    • Routine: cast Quen before closing, dodge one attack, land a short fast-attack string, then reposition. Use Yrden on the noonwraith instead of forcing ordinary swings.
    • Add Wolf School Techniques while wearing medium pieces. Follow Muscle Memory to Three Strikes and then Undying if mistakes are regularly costing the fight.
    • Read the Griffin maps from Midcopse's armorer if you want an early crafted medium set. Its base gear is a practical level-11 bridge rather than a requirement to abandon the Wolven plan.
    • Start Master Armorers at Crow's Perch. Preserve the guide's reserved Even Odds contracts; ordinary build advice using Quen, oils or mutagens does not apply to those two attempts.
    • On the Signs side, continue from Active Shield through Supercharged Glyphs, Catalyst and Chain Reaction as points permit. Keep the active selection small enough to fit your unlocked slots.
    • Then work toward Aftershock and Resonance. This is the longer hybrid destination: cast, follow with melee attacks, and switch Signs to match the enemy.
    • Work toward Hattori's service through Of Swords and Dumplings when the quest is manageable. Keep materials for your chosen school upgrades and money for the nearby missable card purchases.
    • During the subsequent Kaer Morhen sweep, begin the Wolven hunt at the old Signal Tower. Read its notes, solve the crystal/portal route, and continue to the sword diagrams.
    • Keep upgraded Griffin or other useful medium pieces until you can equip the relevant Wolven items. Being able to find a diagram is not the same as meeting its equip requirement.
    • Put additional ranks into the abilities you actually use. Take Fleet-Footed after Undying if dodging needs reinforcement, or continue Resonance if the casting-and-sword loop feels comfortable.
    • Arrive with maintained swords, an upgraded medium set and your current active skills checked. Do not spend the auction's reserved crowns on an optional enchanting detour first.
    • Iris is an optional alternative steel sword on the save-Olgierd branch; it is not required for this build. Preserve the existing auction and Viper sword warnings whatever gear you use.
    • Reforge is available through unlocked master craftsmen in Remastered, so appearance can be changed without building your combat plan around inferior stats.
    • Complete Turn and Face the Strange when the letter arrives and research a mutation to earn Weapon W. Account for its separate point and greater-mutagen cost.
    • Conductors of Magic is a later destination for this sword-and-Sign style; follow the mutation menu's actual research chain instead of assuming it is immediately available.
    • Begin the five-virtue route for while completing the existing quests. It is an optional long-term silver sword, and replacing a school sword can change your equipped set count.
    • Use Lafargue's Wolven hunt and craft the desired upgrades when the level and material requirements are met. Keep the six-piece achievement setup available even if your everyday swords differ.
    • Equip the full matching school set for Dressed to Kill before returning to a mixed-sword loadout. Collect the other original schools' diagrams for Turned Every Stone without crafting every set.
    • At cleanup, preserve branch saves before any ordinary-skill respec. Ciri, romance, vineyard visitors and incompatible ending loot remain story decisions, independent of this build.

Your completion route: Finish the base campaign and expansions along your preferred outcomes. Difficulty achievements, alternate finales and the 78-award checklist are optional goals with their own requirements.

Changing your plan keeps your saved achievements, quest choices and checklists. Required respecs, unlocks and later equipment are explained at their route steps.

Reading edition: continuous regional chapters, expanded main-story directions and collapsed consequence comparisons. PC Remastered 5.01 checked against CDPR’s 8 October notes. The guide covers Wild Hunt, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine; later advertised content is not silently counted as covered.

PC Remastered released on 2026-09-29. The latest official PC patch located in this review is 5.01, released 2026-10-08. Steam retains app 292030.

Scope is the base campaign, Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine. CD PROJEKT RED confirms both expansions are included in Remastered. The announced Songs of the Past expansion is outside this guide's scope.

These eight build paths are researched recommendations, not measured damage rankings or a claim of a personally completed 5.01 playthrough. Official 5.x rules and current community skill references were checked separately from older quest references.

Remastered has connected prerequisites and three ranks per skill. Use the milestone picks as a priority queue, not an exact character-level point budget. Learn required connecting skills, equip the skills you want active, and raise key active skills toward rank 3 as points and slots permit.

Ordinary mutagens and Blood and Wine mutations are different systems. Keep compatible skill colors together around ordinary mutagens. Mutation research uses additional points and greater mutagens, and only one mutation can be active.

Patch 5.01 changes relevant to this guide include the automatic-oil setting fix, added Exploding Shield reflection, corrected Synergy display and PC skill-tooltip refresh, and the previously-opened Vizima reward-chest fix.

Advanced Euphoria and Griffin-Conductors extensions were reviewed against Remastered 5.01 on 9 October 2026. Current build authors support both archetypes; high-Toxicity risk is optional and no universal damage ranking is claimed.

Lilac and Gooseberries

finish the White Orchard prologue and find Yennefer. Section 3.

Family Counselor

complete the Baron's main family investigation. Still do Return to Crookback Bog for the story. Section 4.

A Friend in Need

rescue Dandelion through the Novigrad main quests. Section 5.

Necromancer

progress Yennefer's investigation in Skellige through the relevant necromancy scene. Section 6.

Something More

find Ciri through the Isle of Mists story. Section 7.

Xenonaut

complete the journey between worlds during Through Time and Space. Section 7.

The King is Dead

defeat Eredin in the final campaign sequence. Section 7.

Passed the Trial

complete the base campaign on any difficulty. Wait through the ending.

Ran the Gauntlet

finish with Blood and Broken Bones or Death March maintained. A full Death March run covers this.

Walked the Path

start and finish the base campaign on Death March without lowering it. The expansions are not part of this difficulty requirement.

Friends With Benefits

finish Keira's subplot on any of 8A/B/C. Only 8A also preserves her required Full Crew recruitment. Section 4.

Kingmaker

finish Coronation after 4A/B. Svanrige on 4C requires the saved detour in section 6; it does not award this achievement.

Full Crew

assemble the required allies on one branch with Keira on 8A, a 4A/B ruler and Ves alive. See section 6; Keira death/Svanrige choices need earlier saves. Triss romance and Letho are not mandatory.

Assassin of Kings

unlock and finish Reason of State on 3A/B. Keeping Radovid on 3C requires a detour before reloading. Preserve the early political prerequisites and do not assault Dijkstra in Blindingly Obvious. Sections 5 and 7.

Shrieker

complete the Crow's Perch Shrieker contract. Can be one of your Even Odds attempts.

The Doppler Effect

finish An Elusive Thief in Novigrad; catch the doppler instead of letting him escape. Sparing him can still finish the contract.

Fearless Vampire Slayer

continue The Mystery of the Byways Murders to Sarasti; accepting the villagers' early explanation can miss him. See the warning in section 4.5.

Ashes to Ashes

finish Doors Slamming Shut and deal with Therazane in the haunted estate.

Fiend or Foe?

finish Missing Son in Skellige and the Morvudd investigation.

Woodland Spirit

kill the ancient leshen in In the Heart of the Woods. Harald's ritual-only solution is insufficient.

Geralt: The Professional

complete the original contract list in section 11. Peaceful resolutions can count where the contract supports them; a failed contract does not.

Even Odds

kill two contracted monsters with none of the prohibited combat aids. Use the detailed preparation below; reserve two contracts until it unlocks.

Brawler

defeat Olaf at the end of Skellige's fistfight circuit.

Brawl Master

finish all three regional fistfight circuits and their championship progression, including the final Champion of Champions fight.

Fast and Furious

win the base game's eleven horse races: Crow's Perch 3, Vegelbud 3 plus its final city race, and Skellige 3 plus Heroes' Pursuits finale.

Fire in the Hole

bomb ten monster nests. Loot them after clearing the danger.

Pest Control

destroy all nests in one eligible base region. Skellige's five nests are a shorter checklist than Velen/Novigrad.

Globetrotter

discover 100 signposts. Explore villages and coastlines, not just main-quest destinations.

Gwent Master

win High Stakes at the Passiflora. Save before entry and between matches.

Card Collector

collect the base-game card set. Masquerade/High Stakes losses need reloading. Taking Zoltan's money has a later Prison Warden recovery; verify those cards during The Great Escape if you chose it.

Geralt and Friends

win one Gwent round playing only neutral cards in that round. Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and other neutrals can help; the rest of your deck need not be neutral.

All In

play three hero cards within a single round, then win the whole match. Spread across different rounds does not qualify.

Armed and Dangerous

equip a full matching Witcher set: four armor pieces plus steel and silver swords. A complete is an early practical choice.

Mutant

fill all four ordinary mutagen slots once they unlock. The Blood and Wine mutation interface is separate.

Dendrologist

acquire every ability in one tree. Save, use a respec potion if needed, buy the complete chosen tree and confirm the unlock, then reload if desired. Do not rely on an old fixed point count after Remastered's changes.

Munchkin

reach level 35. Side quests and expansion progression make this natural.

Let's Cook!

learn twelve potion recipes. Check herbalists and alchemists and open formula containers.

Bombardier

learn recipes for six distinct bomb families; six upgrades of the same families are not the intended target.

Bookworm

open and read thirty different books, journals or other documents. Quest papers count.

Power Overwhelming

maintain all five different Sign Place-of-Power buffs simultaneously. Use a White Orchard circuit and do not meditate halfway through.

Butcher of Blaviken

kill five enemies within ten seconds. Later, gather a weak group and use area damage.

Can't Touch This!

defeat five foes in a single fight without taking damage and without casting Quen. Choose weak enemies and fight patiently; toxicity is the stated exception.

Fist of the South Star

win a fistfight without being hit. Counter the opening punch, then avoid overcommitting.

Kaer Morhen Trained

land ten consecutive timed counters without taking a hit or making an ordinary block. Use one isolated swordsman and time each press immediately before impact; holding block breaks the sequence.

Triple Threat

kill three enemies in one fight using three different methods. A sword kill, a Sign kill and a bomb kill are an uncomplicated combination.

What Was That?

perform an attack, a successful counter, a Sign and a bomb throw within four seconds. Put the bomb on a ready shortcut and begin at counter range.

The Enemy of My Enemy

use the Axii ability that makes an enemy fight for you and have the controlled opponent kill another enemy twenty times. Mere confusion or a brief stun is not the required effect.

Environmentally Unfriendly

accumulate fifty kills from environmental hazards such as explosive objects or ignited gas. Weaken foes first and let the hazard deliver the kill.

Humpty Dumpty

cause ten fatal falls with Aard. Fight near genuine drops, not low ledges that only knock enemies down.

Master Marksman

get fifty lethal crossbow headshots on eligible human/nonhuman humanoid enemies. Drowners and other monsters are not a substitute. Weaken bandits, aim carefully and avoid bleed or burn stealing the final hit.

That Is the Evilest Thing…

ten times, ignite a Dragon's Dream gas cloud using an enemy who is already burning. Set the target alight first, then throw the bomb into its position; simply casting Igni into an empty cloud is different.

Overkill

apply bleeding, poison and burning to one enemy at the same time, ten times. Use a durable target, a bleeding bolt or weapon effect, Devil's Puffball and fire; avoid instantly killing the target before all three statuses overlap.

I'm Not Kissing That

defeat the Toad Prince. Main story, section 8.

Pacta Sunt Servanda

finish Hearts of Stone through either finale.

Let the Good Times Roll!

do all ten wedding activities before the night concludes.

Shopaholic

buy all three auction lots. The Viper diagram purchase is separate and still strongly recommended.

Curator of Nightmares

reconstruct all eight Iris memories, including the optional gazebo scene.

When It's Many Against One...

wake all six nightmares before killing any, then defeat them.

I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool

collect four crafted Ofieri armor pieces, three Ofieri horse items and one Ofieri sword. Keep them together until the unlock.

Wild Rose Dethorned

defeat and loot all eight fallen-knight camps in the expansion area.

Killed It

win a Gwent round with at least 187 strength. Northern Realms bonded units, spies, medics and Commander's Horn work well. Clear bad weather and make sure the opponent's Scorch cannot wipe the setup before you pass.

Can Quit Anytime I Want

have seven potion/decoction effects active together. Use toxicity-capacity abilities, several low-toxicity potions and longer-duration effects; drinking seven doses of one potion is not seven different effects. Save before the experiment.

Return to Sender

kill three enemies by reflecting their own arrows. Equip the appropriate deflection ability/rank in your version, weaken an isolated archer and time your block. Merely catching or blocking arrows does not count.

Rad Steez, Bro!

maintain a continuous slide for at least ten seconds. Use a long snowy mountain slope in Skellige; interruptions from rocks or walking reset it.

Moo-rderer

kill twenty cows. Use a rural herd such as the one near Martin Feuille's Farmstead in the northeast and return as animals respawn. Avoid treating White Orchard's early cow field as a consequence-free farming spot.

The Witcher's Gone South

enter Toussaint through the expansion introduction.

David and Golyat

kill the first giant with a crossbow shot to the eye. Reload the arrival checkpoint if missed.

Weapon "W"

develop a mutation after Turn and Face the Strange.

Playing House

buy and complete every Corvo Bianco improvement, including the smaller furnishing/service options.

A Knight to Remember

win the tourney's shooting, race, arena team fight and champion duel. Finish before Capture the Castle.

Embodiment of the Five Virtues

prove all five virtues, complete the hermit's trial and receive .

The Grapes of Wrath Stomped

use 33A: expose the sabotage, reconcile the owners, finish Belgaard and claim the named wine. 33B/C/D requires an R-save detour.

I Have a Gwent Problem

collect the Skellige deck through Toussaint's designated players.

Turned Every Stone

find all thirty diagrams from the five original grandmaster school hunts.

Dressed to Kill

activate the complete six-piece Witcher-school equipment bonus. Wear all four armor pieces and both matching swords from a qualifying set.

Last Action Hero

receive the Order of Vitis Vinifera on 7A/D/E. The 7B/C prison route requires a separate medal detour. See T/U in section 9.

Kling of the Clink

serve time in Toussaint on 7B/C without the ribbon. The Elder and ribbon routes exclude prison on their branch; preserve T/U for the detour.

Hasta la Vista™

kill an enemy frozen by Northern Wind using the crossbow. Weaken it first, freeze it, then make the bolt deliver the lethal hit before the freeze ends.

Choose Cerys for the solved conspiracy and her rule, Hjalmar for his martial reign, or Svanrige for the alternate succession despite the recruitment cost. The ending narration gives Cerys peace and prosperity, Hjalmar continued bloody raids, and Svanrige a centralized absolute monarchy built by shedding his countrymen's blood. Cerys/Hjalmar preserves Hjalmar's recruitment. Svanrige needs a separate, lengthy Coronation/Full Crew branch from checkpoint E. ACHIEVEMENT LOCKOUT - 4C: Svanrige blocks Kingmaker and Hjalmar's contribution to Full Crew. From checkpoint E, use 4A/B, finish Coronation for Kingmaker, then recruit the required allies for Full Crew before reloading E. That temporary branch must also keep Keira on 8A and Ves alive; if it does not, restore the earlier save. Gear timing: win Hjalmar's steel sword before speaking to Crach at the banquet; missing that wager loses this sword. Do it before the later ruler choice on any branch that attends the feast. Keep E.

A - Kill the spirit: the orphans die; Downwarren survives; Anna lives but is mentally unwell, and the Baron takes her away. Consequences and preference: A sacrifices the children to preserve Downwarren and leaves Anna alive with severe mental illness; the Baron departs to seek treatment for her. B saves the children through the spirit, but the spirit destroys Downwarren and the Crones punish Anna: her final release from the curse kills her, and the Baron subsequently hangs himself. Choose whose survival you want to prioritize; neither normal route saves every group. The doll choice affects Anna's final scene, not these losses. These are the normal quest-sequence outcomes. No early-order save-everyone claim is assumed. The hollyhock doll gives Anna a final human conversation in 5B, not permanent survival. Achievement impact: either spirit outcome can complete Family Counselor. Win the Baron's Gwent card before resolving his story, as the local checkpoint requires.

C - Leave the arrangement unchanged; the peasants surrender their reserves. Consequences and preference: The 'god' is a sylvan exploiting frightened peasants for rich food. A makes him accept smaller offerings, keeping him alive while easing their hunger and paying Geralt 50 crowns. B kills him; the worshippers mourn rather than celebrate the exposure. C preserves his demand and the peasants' burden. If he lives, exposing the cellar later leads to its entrance being blocked, but does not confirm his death. B threatens them or lacks enough proof, so Geralt fights the troll, doppler and werewolf while the godling flees, losing the boots. A - Take the rose and end the painted world's current existence. Consequences and preference: A removes the object sustaining the painted world: the world collapses and the cat/dog beings are freed. Iris fears what comes next; the game does not verify whether her soul finds peace or oblivion. B leaves her rose and her painted existence intact, also leaving the beings bound; Geralt takes the altered painting as proof of the wish. Both satisfy Olgierd. Choose release from the preserved world despite the uncertainty, or preserve Iris's refuge and its ongoing confinement. Both can preserve the separate bedroom portrait. The rose-related quest painting is not a Corvo Bianco decoration. Achievement impact: either rose choice remains compatible with the expansion achievements. B honors her request for secrecy and cures her with the egg; she separates from Guillaume and later appears in Novigrad before traveling onward, giving Geralt a feather. Both pay the agreed fee. Choose a shared future with a transferred risk or her independence with the warned seven-year lifespan; she survives the ordinary quest, but a historical script kills her after seven in-game years in Skellige. That delayed behavior and her Kaer Trolde appearance are not confirmed on 5.01. Finish the tourney and win every event in either route. Save before reporting her secret to Guillaume. A permanent merchant discount is not established by this route. Virtue opportunity: 36B forfeits the Compassion deed for sparing Iocaste. Find another qualifying Compassion deed if it is still missing; the kill does not by itself permanently block 's achievement. GEAR CHOICE: 36A gives up the unique Silver basilisk trophy. To keep it, choose 36B and loot Iocaste after the fight; preserve another Compassion opportunity if still needed for . Save before the hunters' timed decision.

Chapter 1 of 20

New game → Kaer Morhen → the White Orchard inn

IN CAMPAIGN ORDER

New game, Kaer Morhen, then the White Orchard inn

Begin here: The main menu, before starting Geralt’s journey.

Before the road opens

1. Choose New Game and the full base-campaign start (Fresh Start where offered) for the full campaign. Leave New Game+ and the standalone expansion starts for another run. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are covered later in this route; having them installed does not mean starting with their high-level shortcuts.
2. Read the difficulty descriptions before confirming. Just the Story! emphasizes story, Story and Sword! is a middle-ground recommendation for a first run, and Blood and Broken Bones! and Death March! increase the combat challenge. If Walked the Path is your chosen target, start on Death March and retain that difficulty through the base ending. You do not need that setting just to use this walkthrough.
Want more combat and travel assistance?

Remastered’s Bard’s Ballad accessibility preset is available when starting on Just the Story, or through Accessibility during play. It can simplify systems such as durability and item weight. Use it if that makes the adventure more enjoyable; this guide does not certify how every custom combination affects difficulty-achievement eligibility.

3. Keep tutorials enabled. If offered Witcher 2 save simulation, choose On to answer the imported-history questions later at Vizima; that choice does not ask you to decide the final ending now. Geralt is a fixed character, and you do not select a class at creation. The suggested balanced sword-and-Sign plan starts coaching when your first skill point is available.
4. When Geralt is controllable in the bedroom at Kaer Morhen, follow the Witcher Senses prompt. Look at the table near the bedroom exit: the key lies on a book. Pick it up, unlock the door and go downstairs. The other highlighted objects are optional observations.
5. Speak with Vesemir and Ciri. Accept the movement practice and follow Ciri along the marked route to the courtyard. Then choose to practice the combat basics with Vesemir. Follow the on-screen prompts for the attacks, dodging, counters and Signs as each is introduced; you do not need to memorize a finished combat build.
6. After the dream, follow Vesemir through the opening road encounter. Keep the movement-and-short-attack rhythm you just practiced. Talk to the rescued merchant Bram, then ride with Vesemir into White Orchard and enter the inn. The next instructions begin at Elsa’s counter.

Shop and prepare before challenging the scholar

7. Speak to Elsa at the bar and open her shop. Prioritize her Catapult, Blue Stripes Commando, Crinfrid Reavers Dragon Hunter, Decoy and Foltest: Lord Commander of the North. Buy the collection cards even if you will not equip every one. Repair supplies and ordinary weapons can wait until you have checked the cards. If money is tight, note the missing purchases and return before the departure checkpoint.
8. Before the scholar’s match, open the Northern Realms deck. Use the weather-clearing Foltest you bought. Keep 22 strong units where possible, retaining Stennis, Dun Banner Medic, the Catapult and matching Tight Bond cards. Specials do not satisfy the unit minimum. Replace weak units as better cards arrive; keep few weather cards.
Help with the first deck and scholar match

Where to look: Start with the Kaer Morhen tutorial and the road with Vesemir. Elsa’s shop is in the White Orchard inn reached after that opening sequence.

What to do: Complete the tutorial and follow Vesemir into the village. At the inn, check Elsa’s collection cards before the scholar’s match, buy the missing cards you can afford, and prepare your actual Northern Realms deck.

What should happen: You have reached the free-roaming village with the bought cards visible in your collection and the intended cards chosen for your next match.

If it does not work: If you are still in the tutorial or opening road encounter, finish its current objective before looking for the inn. At the deck editor, count units separately from specials if the deck cannot begin a match.

Sources for this explanation

The abilities in this first deck: Tight Bond rewards matching copies played together. A Medic replays an eligible non-Hero unit from your discard pile; check that there is something useful there. Decoy returns an eligible unit from your side to your hand, but cannot pick up a Hero. Read the selected card’s ability before committing it.

PLAY & BUILD COACHING

Play for two rounds

A spy strengthens the opponent’s board but draws two cards for you. A smaller deck improves the chance of finding useful combinations. Preserve enough cards for two round wins; conceding an expensive first round can be the better choice.

9. Accept the scholar’s tutorial. Redraw redundant weather or weak unmatched cards, and use Stennis early. After the opponent passes, spend only enough to overtake his total; concede if the cost would ruin your remaining rounds. Keep Decoy for an enemy spy on your side or another reusable non-hero unit.
10. After winning, verify Zoltan Chivay in the collection and replace a weaker ordinary unit if useful. If you lose, reduce the deck’s weak cards and play again before leaving; do not buy a pile of ordinary units merely to increase deck size. The reward is the collection objective here. Keep the scholar’s Gwent book for later regional checks.

Finish the conversations, then collect work

11. Ask about Yennefer and hear Gaunter O’Dimm’s conversation before leaving. Outside, deal with the confrontation, then walk to the village noticeboard near the inn. Read the actual notices: discovering a board is not the same as accepting every posted job. Inspect the journal for Missing in Action and Contract: Devil by the Well. Twisted Firestarter starts by talking to Willis, not by silently following a trail.
12. Walk to Willis at the burned forge in the same village and ask about the damage. Accept his request before searching. Continue directly into the next section on this page; it explains the route to the culprit and keeps the consequences folded until you want to compare them.

Checkpoint Ready to leave the inn area

Scholar defeated; collection reward checked; Elsa’s cards bought or explicitly noted; noticeboard read; Willis spoken to. Do not tell Vesemir you are ready to leave White Orchard yet.

PLAY & BUILD COACHING

Your first active skill

Buy a useful early node for your chosen plan and place it in an unlocked active slot. Learning a skill without equipping it does not provide its ordinary active benefit. Remastered uses prerequisite paths; inspect the connection before saving points for a later node. Muscle Memory suits an early sword plan; Exploding Shield begins the defensive Sign path.

SUGGESTED PLAN · Wolven path — balanced swords and Signs

White Orchard — establish a safe routine

  • Spend the first points on Muscle Memory, Exploding Shield and then Active Shield through its Quen prerequisite. Add Delusion when you want more Axii conversation options.
  • Collect both Viper sword diagrams during the existing sweep. Craft at the garrison blacksmith when affordable; retain the original Kaer Morhen armor for its upgrade path.
  • Routine: cast Quen before closing, dodge one attack, land a short fast-attack string, then reposition. Use Yrden on the noonwraith instead of forcing ordinary swings.

Use these choices when the required level, resource or unlock is available. Opening this section does not change your character.

Update earned achievements (optional)

Card Collector

collect the base-game card set. Masquerade/High Stakes losses need reloading. Taking Zoltan's money has a later Prison Warden recovery; verify those cards during The Great Escape if you chose it.

Kaer Morhen Trained

land ten consecutive timed counters without taking a hit or making an ordinary block. Use one isolated swordsman and time each press immediately before impact; holding block breaks the sequence.

Twisted Firestarter

From the main menu

Begin here: From the noticeboard, speak to Willis at the burned forge and accept the investigation. Stand behind the forge with Witcher Senses active, inspect the scorched evidence and footprints, and follow the trail toward the water. Search both banks where the prints disappear; the continuation leads back toward the village. Inspect the blood and follow it into the house containing the injured Napp. Stop the conversation before agreeing to a payment or escort. Open the comparison below when you are ready to decide.

Quest route and outcome details · open when ready

Checkpoint TWISTED FIRESTARTER

Start with Willis in White Orchard. Save before confronting Napp; finish before departure A.

Before choosing: trace the footprints behind the forge, inspect the river crossing, and follow the wounded man's trail into the village house. Napp's motive is hostility toward a dwarf he sees as serving the occupiers; this is deliberate arson, not an accident. You cannot select a guaranteed lenient sentence after handing him over.

Decision details · exact outcomes and instructions

21A - Bring Napp to Willis: the culprit is exposed and condemned to hanging. Refuse the bribe. Use Axii to make him comply peacefully, or win the fistfight, then return to Willis. The peaceful escort does not make the final punishment nonlethal. Willis summons the soldiers, who treat damage to the garrison's forge as sabotage. You receive Willis's 20-crown reward. Axii also offers dialogue experience.

Decision details · exact outcomes and instructions

Later result: Willis's relationship with the villagers worsens; they take business to a more distant armorer. In a later conversation Geralt can warn him to leave if the Nilfgaardians withdraw. This is an aftermath conversation, not a playable rescue quest. Choose A if exposing and punishing the attacker matters most to you, accepting the death sentence and the local resentment.

Decision details · exact outcomes and instructions

21B - Take the bribe: Napp remains free and Willis never learns the truth from you. Accept Napp's 20 crowns, then return to Willis and report that you could not identify the arsonist. Napp avoids this execution, but he has not been shown to reform; sparing him is not a reconciliation between the two men. Choose B if keeping Napp alive matters more to you than an honest resolution for Willis.

Rewards and completion: both branches close the quest and leave Willis's armorer services available. There is no branch-exclusive Gwent card, unique equipment or quest-specific achievement in this quest's documented rewards. The cash amount is the same; its payer changes. Willis's promise of favorable prices on A is dialogue: the quest wiki records no actual price reduction, so do not choose A expecting a verified shop discount. No later main-ending dependency is documented for this decision.

Campaign notes & backups

Coverage, version notes and sources

This is a researched PC guide, not a personally tested playthrough.
